Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Gosh, the summer picnic was so much nicer--and warmer--than the spring one. There were tables and chairs set up in the sun and the shade, and more than enough food for everyone. Hopefully, everyone was up for socializing for a while!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

The look on Merrill's face said that she knew the feeling. "Of course you can, I don't mind at all," she blurted out. "It's good that you're thinking of him when he's not here."

She frowned slightly for a moment, thinking. "I think I understand what you mean. About asking people where they're from, that is. A lot of people can say they were born in Ferelden, or they grew up in Antiva, but my clan never stays anywhere for long. That's hard to understand sometimes, I think."

"He's my best friend," Tip said. To her that meant thinking about him was a given. "So your clan is nomadic?" she asked. "It must be a big change, staying in one place for school."

"I've never stayed in any place so long," Merrill replied, nodding. "I still expect someone to come by and tell me I've worn out my welcome any time. And so many people! I'm not used to that, either."

She fiddled with the hem of her sleeve as she said, "It must be nice, having a friend like that."

Tip nodded. "He's really cool. I'd never really had a best friend until I met him." She wanted to ask if she hadn't managed to make any friends here, but that seemed a little weird for a first time conversation. "How long have you been here?"

Merrill tapped one finger against her lips and frowned in concentration.

"Oh, that's a good question. When did I arrive? Two terms ago, in August." Which was the one month of the Thedosian calendar that by some bizarre coincidence happened to have the same name as the one on this Earth. "Creators, I can't believe it's been so long already. I hope you like it here, in any case. I do, more than I expected."

"Almost a whole year," Tip observed. "You must like it to have stuck around this long. Did you go to school before you got here, too?"

Steven apparently hadn't, so she knew it wasn't a prerequisite.

"Not like this, no." With . . . other people. Human people. "Most of the others did, but I just studied with the Keeper."

"Oh neat! . . . I don't know who the Keeper is."

Merrill ducked her head briefly, and there was an abashed look on her face when she raised her head again. "Oh, it would help if I explained that, wouldn't it? Every Dalish clan has a Keeper. It's the Keeper's job to remember our history and make sure it's passed down."

"So . . . you were learning to be your clan's new Keeper," Tip guessed. "That's really cool. I love learning about history and stories."

Merrill nodded. "Someday. A long, long time from now, hopefully." The idea of actually being Keeper someday always gave her a little bit of an upset stomach. "But I know plenty of stories now, if you'd be interested in hearing them. Maybe not right now, but I'd be happy to share."
