Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Gosh, the summer picnic was so much nicer--and warmer--than the spring one. There were tables and chairs set up in the sun and the shade, and more than enough food for everyone. Hopefully, everyone was up for socializing for a while!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Funny how she and Ringo had both decided to try to follow in Kathy's footsteps on this one - when all Dante wanted to do was go with last week's train of thought and put it all behind him.

Not that he could glean her reasoning from that 'hi', though, so he had no problem sticking with it for now.

"Hey, Alluka," he said. "Out here people watching too?"

Probably not for the same 'scoping out the new hot people' reasons as him.

She probably wasn't even going to tell him, since she wasn't really sure of it herself. What Kathy would do for Dante was probably nothing like what Alluka could do.

But she could sit by him at a picnic. It was kind of reassuring, since Alluka knew him and she didn't know a lot of people, and they still tended to overwhelm her a bit.

She smiled at him. "Uh huh. I was over there," she pointed to the food tables, "but, but I wanted to sit for a while and everyone's so neat to look at. No one looks the same."

That was fine. Dante really didn't want whatever Kathy would do anyway.

"Yeah, we've got some interesting people this time, don't we?" he said. "Like that walking Mountain Dew commercial over there."

He nodded towards Peridot.

Alluka actually understood that comment, which pleased her. She glanced over at where he nodded and giggled.

"Maybe she just likes the green?" Alluka said, since she didn't want to be mean about the new... person. "It's a lot of green though."

A lot, a lot.

"There's having a theme," like Dante's intense love for black and red, "and then there's that."

He leaned back on his elbows. "I'd say she looks like she wants to hide in the bushes, but it's the wrong kind of green for that."

"It's not even all the same green," Alluka mused. "Do... do you think she just comes in green? Like, some of my toys are funny colours all the time."

"Maybe?" Dante offered. He grinned - not as big as usual, but still - and added, "Poor thing. It is not easy being green."

Alluka laughed and clapped her hands together.

"That's mean," she said, but she was still laughing, so... it wasn't that mean, obviously. "Maybe there's different colours? Green might not be the only one!"

Dante snickered. "Maybe they've got the whole rainbow back where that one comes from," he said. "Bunch of weird-colored triangles."

"Maybe they light up in the dark," Alluka suggested. She wasn't trying to be mean. This was a genuine idea she had. "I think they'd look rather pretty if they were all lit up and different colours."

Dante thought about it, letting slip another amused noise. "Like Christmas lights?" he said. "I can see that."

Poor Peridot. He was going to think of her as a giant Christmas ornament forever.

"A whole people of Christmas lights!" Alluka thought that would be great. "Imagine what it would look like if they were all out shopping and it was snowing!"

"Wonder if they'd all look as pissed-off as that one," Dante remarked. "That'd be funny."

"Would it be?" Alluka asked, a bit plaintively. "What if they're all mean? That'd be sad if you couldn't make friends with them."

Dante shrugged. "If they were all mean, you wouldn't have to feel like shit about making fun of 'em," he said.

Not that he generally felt like shit about that, period, but Alluka seemed like she'd care.

"I guess so," she said, a bit doubtfully. "But it's more fun to have friends than not to."

Dante shrugged. "Friends can be a pain in the ass," he said. "And sometimes you don't get a whole lot of choice."

Dante clearly had never had a friend that he could stick up on a shelf and ignore when he didn't want to deal with it.

"In friends?" she asked. "Or in being mean?"

"Both," Dante said. He shrugged.

Yeah, no. Not a lot of his friends were the up on a shelf kind.

"When do you not have a choice about meanness?" Alluka asked curiously.

Her family killed people for a living, but Alluka didn't think that was mean.

It was just a job.

"When somebody else is an asshole to you, you gonna sit there and take it?" Dante said. (He was a brilliant role model here, clearly.) "Or if they try to hit you?"

"If, if someone hit me, I would probably cry," Alluka admitted.

"Well, that's only going to work for you as long as you're tiny and cute," Dante said, tilting his head at her. "Which is not going to be forever-- how old are you, anyway?"

Alluka looked down at her elephant and shrugged after a moment.

"I don't really know," Alluka said, since she was really, really bad with the passage of time. "I'm going into my second year here?"

She was about fifteen?

Dante'd been a sixteen- and then seventeen-year-old sophomore. Probably to make up for the fact he'd never had formal schooling before, but still.

"Right," he said, "So you're going to grow out of the wide-eyed kid look pretty fast. You'll have to come up with something better than crying and making people feel bad."
