Weapon Safety, Wednesday

When the students arrived to class today, they'd find that the usual dummies had been replaced by a Danger Shop-generated gun range.

"So, those of you who weren't impressed by the crossbows last week, hopefully you'll find this week's class a little more to your liking," Sam said. "If we're going to talk about being safe with weapons, we've got to talk about guns at some point, focusing very heavily on the safety aspect." Sam probably could have gone into a long description of the history of guns, but instead, he went into a long description of how guns worked, how to clean them, and how to safely fire them.

"I want you to follow the same protocols we would follow at a real gun range," he said, giving everyone a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. "I know I can trust you guys, and if you run into any trouble, let me know."

Look, you didn't grow up on the road without learning how to use a rifle or shotgun. The carnival had to overnight in all sorts of dangerous territory, with both human and animal predators, and it was safety as well as survival.

Also because trick shooting was a nice easy addition to any carnival, and all the kids were expected to learn it in case someone was out sick.

Ada, for her part, picked out a rifle, and sat down to clean and check it properly before loading it and deciding to make pretty patterns in her target. A smiley face, a star, tic-tac-toe...
