Pinkie had on a jaunty pair of sunglasses as she waited for the students this week. "Hiyahiya!" she greeted. "Hope you're all set for some fun in the sun, because where we're going today, summer is in full bloom!"

"Technically," said Eliot, glaring daggers at the pony. He was wearing full cold weather gear, including hat, gloves, scarf, and snow boots. "Very, very technically."

"In fact," Pinkie continued blithely, "it's so summery there, the sun's not going to set until after midnight!"

Eliot smirked tiredly. "Yeah," he said. "We're going to Antarctica."

"Hope Bay, Antarctica!" Pinkie cheered. "Also known as 'Iceberg Alley!' Doesn't that sound so neat?"

"Fortunately the forecast down there today's hoverin' around the freezing point," Eliot said. "Because it's summer. And one of the furthest points on the continent from the pole. You're welcome."

Pinkie sighed. "I wanted to see the pole."

"There -- it ain't an actual pole in the ground. It's just a geographic point."

"Then why's it called a pole?"

Okay, *now* Hanna was getting just a little homesick. This was the right kind of snow.

The penguins were new and desperately cute, though.

Kathy was bundled up but good, but forgot all about her discomfort in her excitement to talk to the people at the base about some of the projects they were working on.

Anders could do without the cold, but the penguins made up for it. He found a good vantage point and watched them do their waddling thing.

"Oh look," Kathy said, pointing at one of the penguins. "That one looks like you!"

This was not in any way true. Wasn't going to stop Kathy from teasing, though.

"Oh look, he fell. Yeah, definitely you."

"He is an unusually handsome fellow," Anders grinned. "Oh, look, there's a chunky little one going after fish right there -- she's your double."

Kathy lightly whacked his shoulder for that--even as her stomach growled. Look, you become a superfast superball and not have it play havoc on your metabolism.

"She does look to be the smartest and the nicest penguin in the flock," she sniffed. This was based on nothing at all, but she was sticking to it. "I can see the resemblance. Yours remains unable to right himself."

"He's creative," Anders improvised. "He wants a little rest and a wriggle before he stands back up, and what's wrong with that? It's much better than catching fish all day long like certain penguins."

"He's just lazy," Kathy declared. "He couldn't figure out how to get up and has decided to just lay there. While certain other penguins work hard to make sure the whole flock has enough to eat because she's a giver."

Certain penguins were happily scarfing down the fish they caught, giving no apparent thought to any other penguins.

"...She's hungry after a hard day of work."

"She's greedy," Anders returned easily. "Or maybe she's eating for two, but I bet it's just greed."

"She's trying to keep her strength up because obviously the whole flock looks to her for guidance," Kathy maintained. "Your penguin is just practicing for his inevitable fate as lunch for a seal."

"You'd doom penguin-me to being eaten by a seal?" Anders asked, eyes going wide. "You're cruel, Kathy. Penguin-you must be nicer."

"I'm not hoping for it!" Kathy said, trying not to burst out laughing at his expression and startle the penguins. "But if he can't manage to get up, that's what's going to happen!"
