Face was, wonder of wonders, awake, bright-eyed and bushy tailed, behind the desk.

Mostly because he'd gotten up early to listen to the radio in case anything interesting had happened during that three minute date business last night. What could he say, he liked gossip, especially when it didn't involve him.

"That always leads to nonsense," Cassandra muttered, as she perused the stacks.

Which was probably why Garik was so interested.

"But entertaining nonsense," Face cheerfully pointed out.

"Must you gossip?" Cassandra called.

If he brought any of it up, she was going to staunchly pretend she wasn't interested.

"Only when it's interesting." Because Face was quite shameless. "Seems like there was something in the water and everyone acted weird."

"Most on this island are always weird," she said, picking up a book at random. Then setting it back down again. "How was this any different?"

"There was something about squirrel roofies and people making out," Face replied. "When I did it, I didn't have the overwhelming urge to make out with anyone."

"... What is a roofie?" Cassandra said, pausing. "Do I want to know?"

Yes. Yes she did. Tell her everything.

"I'm not entirely sure." Because you know who didn't spend a lot of time looking up that particular subject? Face didn't. "But it seems to refer to slipping spice in someone else's drink... the drug kind, not food kind."

"The dates were drugged?!"

It was easier to play it cool when you didn't sound so completely aghast, Cass.

"It was one of the suggestions for why people were acting weird." Face was very carefully not mentioning one of the other theories was magic, because that would end well. "Seems like whatever it was wore off before people even left the bar though."

"That would be just like them," Cassandra said, grabbing a random book with a touch of force. "Squirrels. I do not know why we let them go everywhere as they do."

"Because we don't actually know if they did it?"

"They do enough ridiculousness," Cassandra muttered, coming back out of the stacks.

"They're not that bad, well maybe Leroy is."

"Which one is he?" Cassandra asked. She slapped the book down on the counter.

"The one who keeps making terrible life choices," Face replied. "How does a squirrel even get credit?"

"How do squirrels know how to write?" Cassandra said mildly. "It is magic, no doubt. Ridiculous magic."

Face shrugged and asked "More or less ridiculous than the food rains?"

"Certainly more intrusive," Cassandra pointed out.

"At least they're not hiding in the bushes with holorecorders." Because that had been a thing that'd happened.

Cassandra frowned at him. "What are you talking about?"

"It's one of the favoured newsgathering methods of sludge reporters. The squirrels are bastions of journalistic integrity by comparison."

"So you are used to this?" Cassandra said, frowning. "I am... sorry. That must be vexing."

Face shrugged again. "It only happened a handful of times." A couple of creepy times. "I was too young to be doing any of the things that really make the sludges' headlines."

"There appears to be little respect for any privacy outside of Thedas," Cassandra muttered. "And I thought the Orlesians were terrible."

"Well, what can you expect from people with hats like that?"

"Ugh," Cassandra said.

She felt that summed everything up.

"Let us talk about something less annoying," she said. "Have you been reading anything of interest?"

What else could you say about Orlesian hats?

"I read the school calendar and there's a dance next Friday."

Smooth, Face.

Cassandra blinked. "There is?"

She had completely forgotten this was a thing.

To be fair, Face had been reading the calendar because he was trying to remember what Valentine's Day actually was. "It's for that holiday they have here, the romantic one?"

"I... vaguely remember something of the kind last year," Cassandra said, and Maker, why was she suddenly blushing?

"Yeah, there was," Face said. "Though I went on my own last year." Which given how he'd made out with Mara there was for the best, really.

"So did I, I believe," Cassandra said. Wait... was he hinting at something? "Ah. I'm sure."

Yes, yes he was hinting at something. "I don't suppose you'd care to go together this time around?"

One would have thought she would have assumed that he'd ask, and yet it still came as a surprise.

"Yes!" she exclaimed.

Beat.

"... Pretend that came out at a dignified volume."

"Of course," Face said, then grinned, like a sap. "It'll be fun. Romantic."

Yeah, he didn't know Isabela was doing the decorating.

Cassandra beamed back.

Shy at first, then full blast.
