Jack of All Trades, Wednesday, Per 1

This was a Hardison class, so they met in the Danger Shop, even though there was no real reason why a regular classroom wouldn't do. Well, other than because Hardison's love for the Danger Shop might just have rivaled the love for his crew and he'd take any opportunity to play with it.

Speaking of things he loved a great deal, the Danger Shop was programmed to mimic the bridge of the ship from Galaxy Quest. Because Age of the Geek, baby, that was why.

"Sup, class," he said, spinning the Captain's chair around to greet them. "Welcome to Jack of All Trades. Why don't y'all take a seat." he gestured to the empty work stations ringing the bridge. "As most of y'all from Earth know, there's a sayin' that goes Jack of all trades, master of none. Some of y'all not from Earth might know a similar sayin'. However, what most folks don't know is that that's not the whole of the proverb. The way it actually goes is Jack of all trades, master of none, though oftentimes better than master of none. Don't get me wrong, bein' a specialist is a good thing a lot of the times. I specialize in hackin', in fact. But sometimes it's good to be a generalist, to have other skills to fall back on. You might not always be the best at somethin', but a lot of times, knowin' just enough and how to use that knowledge effectively is way more helpful than bein' useful in one specific circumstance."

"First week is traditionally introductions an' this class is no different. So gimme your name an' class, then tell me what skill or activity you'd like to learn about this semester. Can't promise we'll get to 'em all, but I'm always open to suggestions. Sound good? A'ight, we'll start with you," he said, pointing to a student at random.

"I'm Raven Darkholme," Raven said. "I'm a senior. And I'd actually be interested in learning some hacking."

"I'm Kaylin Neya. I am a... a... a soph-thingy."

She'd been listening to other people's ideas and had to admit she was intrigued. "Lockpicking... that sounds interesting, though back home it's pretty much either magic or you might as well just kick them in, so..." She considered. "And more fighting is always good. Um... swords? I'm not so good with them. That might be good."

And There Go The Alarms...

As soon as the last introduction had been made, a loud voice began to chant "Emergency. Emergency" while red and yellow lights began to flash. It lasted no more than ten seconds, but that was enough.

"Uh-oh, looks like there's an emergency on deck," Hardison said. "Someone's gonna haveta handle it. Ya'll each have a problem that needs to be dealt with. Not solved, necessarily, but you gotta try to at least help fix it. Name three completely different skills and how you could use 'em to help mitigate this problem. They ain't even gotta be skills you currently have; just three skills that could be helpful in different ways. For example, if suddenly I detected a hole in space, I know how to quickly optimize research to see if anything like this has been encountered before an', if so, what it is an' how to deal with it. I could use psychology to help keep the crew calm an' clear-headed through the crisis. Lastly, I could use my navigational skills to turn this ship around an' just avoid it all together. See? Three skills, three different ways to help. It's all in how you approach the problem."

*Half the crew has been replaced by evil versions of themselves--Hanna Heller & Rey
*A plague has broken out and half the ship is sick, maybe even dying--Raven Darkholme & Garik Loran
*Hostile aliens have been spotted and are threatening to attack--Cosette Fauchelevent & Maria DeLuca
*The lower levels of the ship are flooded and the engine room is in danger--Ada Miller & Kira Yukimura
*A prickly diplomat is on board and has to be kept in a good mood--Edward Kenway & Jalian d'Arsennette y ken Selvren
*You're part of the away team and are stranded in the middle of a snowstorm--Kaylin Neya & Mara Jade

Feel free to work together and come up with six skills to be used on the problem, or by yourself and list three.

"Well, that hunting class I ended up in by mistake last semester may turn out to be useful after all," Cosette said wryly. "Though I'd much rather it not come to fighting. I haven't got practice at that. How do you suppose we can keep it from coming to that?"
