Computer Science- Monday- 1st period

Aww, it was kind of nice to be back in the classroom if you were Kitty and had just had a terrible time lately. This was nice and normal.

"Morning, everybody, and welcome to Computer Science," Kitty greeted them. "If you're in the wrong class, feel free to head out now with no judgment, and if you were signed up by accident... sorry. You're stuck with me. For those who don't know me, I'm Kitty Pryde, and I've had some freakishly extensive experience with computers, hacking, programming... All that fun stuff. You're going to learn some of it. My only caveat is that you don't use anything you learn here for bad reasons. Like, if I find out you're using it to hack into a bank or whatever, you're absolutely getting detention in addition to the probable police investigation. So, normally we'll be in the Danger Shop, where you'll get simulations where you're going to have to compute your way through them, and that's why today's important: introductions! You get me first, before you get sick of these, but. We're going to go around the room, and I want you to tell me who you are, what kind of experience with all this you have, and whether you think you need help in any certain area. If you don't have much or don't know what you need help with, that's fine, we'll work with it. All right, let's start with you."

"Hey, I'm Cosima," Cosima said, with a quick wave. "I've been online since I was little and I'm pretty good with all the normal computer stuff, like games and basic programming. So basically I'm here to get better at everything."

"Hi." Tali waved one hand, and threw in a cheerful little fingerwiggle for old times' sake. (You learned to compensate somehow, when people couldn't see your face.) "I'm Tali, and I've been studying computing and engineering since I was little, but I'm from 2183 and most of our technology has a totally different basis, so I guess you could say I'm here because human computer science in this time period is fascinating, and I wanted more of a chance to get familiar with it."

She paused.

". . . so what exactly do you consider bad reasons? Just out of curiosity."

And not because she wondered if anything she'd done actually qualified. Nope.

Tali nodded. "Got it. So . . . say you had a group of hostile artificial intelligences attacking you, and you hacked one of them to make it attack the others in self-defense. That would be okay, right? You know. Hypothetically speaking."

Though it was pretty obvious that she wasn't speaking hypothetically at all.

This was why Tali hadn't mentioned trapping that turian mercenary in the incinerator. (Which had also been self-defense, but.)

"Okay, good. Just wanted to make sure."

"I am Laura Kinney. I am proficient with computers, both in the conventional and the... less so." Because of course she was. "I look to further improve my skills." In whatever way Kitty could. Laura knew herself to be pretty good, but she also knew that Kitty was most likely better.

"Hi! I'm Kira Yukimura, and I don't have a ton of experience with computers, but a little while ago when those aliens showed up and kidnapped people, I got to learn how to code to mess with their ship and it was a lot of fun and a little terrifying, but mostly fun," she said. "So, I want to learn more about computers now, in case that sort of skill becomes helpful again."

"Professor Kitty."

Laura was there, not out of the blue but yeah, there. Feeling old already, Pryde? Give it a couple of years.

"Do you believe the students will not use what they learn to break the law anyway?"

There was honest curiosity on Laura's voice. She wasn't going to tell the woman how to teach, but Laura wasn't big on trust just like that.

"You are right." Laura wondered if people that came here where inherently good, or at least not downright evil, but it was hard to think such filtering would exist. "Have you taught here long?" She had missed that question before, so better ask while they were at it.

Three years was a lot of time, considering Laura knew Kitty wasn't that old. She did seem to have teaching under control, though. "I would not know," she admitted. "But I hope it is." For Kitty's sake, mostly.

Laura nodded.

"Nobody knows who I am." Almost nobody. "I like that."

Was that her way to say 'okay'? Maybe.

"I cannot imagine they would not judge me, though." Even if they learned a bit of it, Laura's life wasn't precisely PG-13. Worst of all, she wouldn't lie if she had no choice. She was totally ready to go through it.

"I- I hope so." But she didn't have high hopes. Did she ever?

"I will not take more of your time. Thanks for humoring me."

"Thank you." She meant that a lot. Laura then nodded and walked away, feeling a bit better with herself somehow.
