Practical Phys Ed, Monday, Period 3

Welcome to the Danger Shop! Fred was standing in the middle of what looked like a gym. Sure, he could have used the actual gym, but why do that when you could be in a fake gym? He was wearing a tracksuit that had his costume underneath, just in case he needed to be in a costume suddenly. Mainly because his costume had jetboots.

"Hey, kids. I'm Coach Myers. And keep that in mind because if you don't call me 'Coach,' I'm gonna fail you," Fred said. He kept silent for a moment before giving a laugh. "Nah, I'm kidding, I wouldn't fail you for that." He stopped laughing and glared. He totally would fail you. He controlled your fates. Don't pretend he didn't! He could keep you out of college!

"So, what we're gonna do in this class is playing sport that might actually be helpful to you sometime in your lives. Running, karate stuff, things like that," Fred explained. "So don't worry, none of that dodgeball crap. I would never make you play a garbage game like that."

A dodgeball materialized in his hand and he threw it at somebody's head. "I mean, you're still getting a dodgeball thrown at your heads for no good reason, because that's life. We're gonna call that the Ball of Talking. Even if it pops you in the mouth, you gotta talk about who you are and what your favorite sport is. I'll start even though I don't have the ball because I'm the Coach and I can do what I want. I'm Coach Fred Myers. I'm old enough to probably be your dads (since I matured early), so don't be afraid to look at me as a mentor. And I like baseball, which prepared me for life because a bunch of nerds who don't even know how to throw a ball run the entire game now. You, with the Talking Ball, start talking, then throw the ball at someonef. And while you do that, here's the Ball of Being My TA. Imma throw it in the middle of you and whoever picks it up gets to rule over the rest of the group for the whole semester. The rest of you get to run laps at the end of class. Because life."

Fred threw a dodgeball at somebody's head. Hopefully they caught it! Even if they didn't, they still gotta talk. Name, grade, favorite sport.

And yes, first person in is the person he threw the ball at.

Good thing dexterity was one of Isabela's more important stats.

She caught the ball and flung it straight back at Fred's head (should've been more specific about that 'someone') with a glare. "Isabela, junior...I think, I like duels."

'Duels' was technically not a sport, Isabela.

Fred caught the ball... And threw it right back. "Dueling's not a sport. Be more specific. Fencing? Shooting? Karate stuff?" Yes, he was going to keep calling it that. "And throw the ball at someone who isn't me."

Fine. "I like fighting people with knives," she said, tossing the ball randomly to a classmate.

Nathan just barely managed to catch the ball before it beaned him in the head. He held it, glared and then shook his head. Being mad wasn't going to accomplish anything.

"Nathan. Senior. I like to run." He didn't know if that qualified as a sport but it was what he liked.

"What kind of running? Long distance? Sprinting? Marathon? One of those where the running is just the foreplay before you jump or use a pole to jump?" Fred asked. "Next time I'm gonna tell you kids to be specific from the start."

"Running," he said, shrugging. "I like all kinds. I haven't really ever had a preference. It's all fine to me."

Alana caught the ball, grinned because she was happy she hadn't missed like a doofus, and then started to talk.

"Hey, I'm Alana," she said. "I'm a senior, and I like wrestling."

Mainly because it was part of the Open Circuit, and she loved the Open Circuit.

"Hey, that's almost specific enough to be meaningful. Congrats,you're winning the class so far!" Fred said. "Which wrestling? The amateur stuff in the Olympics, or the pro stuff that's all fake except for when it really, really, really isn't."

He had seen a few Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation fights and he did NOT get the impression that The Thing was doing anything scripted. Also, he hooked up with one of the Grapplers once. He wasn't saying that out loud because she told him not to and he was scared of her.

"Pro stuff," Alana said, shrugging because she knew this was probably the wrong answer but didn't particularly care. "Especially the type we have at home. I like how it goes from a soap opera to somebody trying to rip somebody else's head off and right back to a soap opera."

"Hey, you're OFFICIALLY winning the class now," Fred said, because that WAS the correct answer. "If you have any YouTube links to that stuff, send them along so I can watch them the next time I get bored and want to watch something dumb and great."

"Sweet," Alana said. Winning class was pretty cool. "And I have a couple clips I could copy to a thumb drive for you. Open Circuit is like the definition of dumb but great."

For a minute, Kathy really missed her old ball routines. She caught the ball with ease and tossed it from hand to hand as she gave her introduction. "I'm Kathy Li and I'm a senior. I used to be a competitive rhythm gymnast--mostly ribbon, but some ball and hoop and regular floor, too. Now I do a lot of free-running and parkour."

And yoga and hand-to-hand, but she wasn't sure Coach was going to count those as sports.

Then she tossed to ball at someone else, hopefully not too hard though.

"Rhythm gymnastics? Pretty much a sport. Good job," Fred said. "Parkour's not a sport. It's just a thing. Fortunately, you gave a real sportish thing, so you're doing okay. Ish."

"Thanks?" Kathy said. "Uhh, Coach? What's the difference between a sport and an..." She tried to think of a decent way to phrase it. "An athletic pastime?"

"You mean a Not a Sport," Fred said. "A sport is competitive. It's athletic and you're trying to beat somebody. And don't tell me there are parkour competitions. If you're going to, trust me, they don't exist. It's all hallucinations from cracking their heads open on walls and fire hydrants."

"I'm Rey," she said, catching the ball. "And I don't know. And I don't know."

"You're English. Just say 'cricket' and gloat about the Ashes for a minute and make me hate you," Fred said, showing Australia pride and Myers bitterness. "And what do you mean you don't know what year you are?"

"Ugh, aliens. Fine, don't you have any alien sports?" Fred said. "I'll count probing rednecks if that's how you have fun."

Ringo almost dropped the ball. Mostly because her first instinct was to dodge, and she was most of the way out of the way before she remembered that she was supposed to catch it. So there was some fumbling and juggling before she ended up getting her hands firmly on it.

"Um, I'm Ringo Noyamano." It turned out to be awkward to bow properly with a dodgeball in your hands, but Ringo went for it anyway. "I'm a freshman, and I like AirTrek." Best sport ever!

"That's not a thing, try again," Fred said. Was it really a shock that he was immediately dismissive of something he had never heard of?

Ringo scowled. "It is too a thing!" she shot back. Because glaring at and arguing with Fred was a great way to not fail the class.
