Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Okay, admittedly, having a picnic at the beginning of January wasn't the best idea the school had ever come up with. Thankfully, the weather was sort of agreeable today - it wasn't too chilly, the sun was out, and there were still pretty pockets of unmelted snow on the lawn.

In the middle of the lawn, a bonfire had been set up for warmth and light--mostly the warmth--and the tables and chairs had been set out to mostly be in the sun. There was a long table with a variety of ~~moddable~~ warm foods, and there was the usual table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Oh, they could compete in sarcasm then, no doubt.

"Cumberland, England," Lucille replied. "And yourself? I was taught at home before this, so I have nothing to compare with"

"I used to go to Ever After High," Raven explained. "It's by the Village of Book End...near the Enchanted Forest."

She wasn't too sure where that was in relation to England or Fandom, though.

"I'm not familiar with that place," Lucille replied. "But I've been told that in this place you should ask what time someone is from, so perhaps that explains it. When I left England this morning it was 1885."

"1885? Wow, I bet you don't know what the MirrorNet is, or have a MirrorPhone," Raven said, fishing her cellphone out of her bag.

She fiddled with it and pointed it toward Lucille. "Do you mind if I take a picture of you? I want to send it to Maddie -- she's my best friend back home."

To Lucille taking photographs was rather a lot more complicated, and all she managed was: "Ah, no, I don't mind."

She assumed a suitable pose, looking serious and dignified. "What is that... MirrorPhone?"

Raven snapped a quick picture, then moved beside Lucille to show her the results. "It takes pictures and lets me call home, or access the MirrorNet. And it has apps that can let you listen to music or read books and all kind of stuff. Smile!"

She flicked her finger at the screen to turn the camera to selfie mode, then leaned in against Lucille and held it up to try to take a picture of them both.

Instead of a smile, Raven caught Lucille in more of a deer-in-headlight look. And Raven's explanation was more or less unintelligible to Lucille. The only thing she got was: "Music?"

"I love music!" Raven said. She saved the picture and flipped through the phone's screen again, this time pulling up her music app. The latest song by Taylor Quick started playing.

Sorry about your ears, Lucille.

"Is this considered music?" Lucille looked horrified.

"I know, it's a little too bouncy for my tastes ordinarily," Raven said, though she was bouncing herself a bit to the tune her world's version of "Shake It Off." "But I like the meaning of the song."

"It means something?" Lucille's expression didn't change. "I have to confess I prefer piano music."

"I'm dancing on my own, I make the moves up as I go, and that's what they don't know, mmm-mmm, that's what they don't know, mmm-mmm," Raven sang for Lucille's "benefit." "It's all about not caring what other people think of you, not letting their opinions shape who you are. You just have to 'Cast It Off.'"

She smiled even more when Lucille mentioned piano. "Oh, do you play? Or just listen to it?"

Forgive Lucille if she was just staring at Raven now, not at all impressed.

"I play," she said, smiling a little too sweetly.

[And now I'm going to bed]

Raven side-eyed her roommate a little, wondering if she needed to tone down the enthusiasm. "That's spelltastic" she said. "I play guitar. I wonder if the school has a band?"

[Night!]

"A band? I suppose there could be a music ensemble." Lucille really wasn't sure, and wasn't quite sure about the idea.

[Oh, I love the idea]

"We'll have to find out," Raven said, delighted by the idea. "It'll be fun! I never got to play much at my old school."

Primarily because boys were stupid.

Lucille wouldn't be surprised to learn that boys could be stupid. Considering the so-called music that Raven had just played - or rather let the tiny machine play - she suspected playing music together wouldn't go smoothly.

"I will try and find suitable music," she offered, "for piano and guitar." There had to be duets available that were enjoyable.
