"Hope everyone enjoyed the free candy and didn't freeze too much without heat this weekend," Anakin said, finishing up a fun-sized Snickers he'd pilfered from his son Christopher's Halloween stash. "Today we're going to do one of our traditional hypotheticals, pulled from a story on this planet called the Lady or the Tiger."

"It is a tale of trial by combat," Obi-Wan said, "-- and no, that planet was not my fault, we are not having that argument in class again, Anakin, I can see you wanting to start -- ahem. In the tale, a young princess becomes rather enarmored of a commoner. Her father discovers this, and is rather displeased about the whole matter."

"If by 'displeased' you mean 'murderously pissed off', then yes," Anakin said. "And it was absolutely your fault but that's not under discussion. He captured the young commoner, put him through a sham of a trial and then placed him in an arena with two doors. Behind one was a beautiful woman--not the princess--that he would have to marry immediately. Behind the other was a tiger, who would devour him with severe prejudice. The princess, who wasn't exactly in the relationship with the commoner for entirely altruistic reasons, knew which door led to what. The commoner looked up to her, she nodded to a door...and that's where the story ends. What you get to decide is what fate she led him to...and what you would have done in her place."

"Was she struck by jealousy, or perhaps did she decide that the relationship had run its course and it was best to clean up, so to speak?" Obi-Wan asked. "Or did her feelings for the commoner trump such selfish desires?"

Anakin smiled at Obi-Wan. "What would you do, Master?"

"I would choose the woman, of course," Obi-Wan said, without even a moment's hesitation. QUELLE SURPRISE.

Anakin smirked. "Of course you would. Okay, class, your turn."

And then read the story.

Hard-core king, huh?

Well, now Merrill mostly wanted to know whose fault that planet had really been. She was reading the story, but . . . SHE WAS REALLY CURIOUS NOW.

Did the princess sentence her lover to a life without her, or no life at all?

Which would you choose?

"Choosing the tiger would show a real lack of foresight on her part," Isabela said. "It's not like a marriage would be that big an obstacle."

"That's just what I was thinkin," Lottie admitted. "Especially if everyone knows it's a well loveless marriage."

"But perhaps she is a jealous one," Obi-Wan supplied, "Or he faithful."

"If she thinks he has to get mauled by a tiger because her dad decided he's not good enough for her, she's a terrible princess," Lottie said. "And if he's gonna go all head over heels for a new girl just 'cause her dad made him marry her, then she can do better."

"Honestly, she'd be better off just hiring an assassin to off the king, then when she's queen she can decide who gets to marry who."

Isabela had spent a little too much time around Antivans.

"The assassin should be a tiger," Lottie decided, who was just a little too into absurd scenarios. "It'd fit in perfectly with his weirdly poetic ruling choices, and the tigers could get revenge for him always capturin them and forcin them to eat his criminals."

Obi-Wan tucked his hands into his sleeves and considered the class.

Also it had not been his fault, Anakin.

That's exactly what someone whose fault it was would think, Obi-Wan.

Anakin smirked over at him.

"No," Obi-Wan said firmly. "It was not."

"If you say so," Anakin said. Smirking.

Obi-Wan let out a very loud sigh.

Stop being smug, Anakin.

Which was a bit like saying "stop breathing, Anakin," some days.

"Your life is very hard," Anakin agreed.

Smugly.

Which was why Obi-Wan had decided to stop bothering to say it and simply... well, sighed.

"Yes," he said, "You do delight in making it so."

"You'd be both bored and boring, otherwise," Anakin said.

"I would like to think I would be perfectly at peace," Obi-Wan said. "Perhaps I might even get some meditation in. I may even manage to teach these children something."

Except Anakin had been gone over the summer and he'd missed him badly but shhh.

"We teach these children plenty," Anakin said, frowning.

"Two of them are currently debating the merits of the princess using the tiger to assassinate her father," Obi-Wan said.

Anakin shrugged in a "what can you do?" sort of way. "I think hiring a trained assassin would be easier."

"Oh, yes," Obi-Wan said, "It was the tiger that was the problem."

Anakin smiled. "So that's a no to fratricide."

"If at all possible," Obi-Wan said, "Yes."

Anakin laughed, giving Obi-Wan a fond look. "If at all possible," he repeated.

"There is always wiggle room if necessity is involved," Obi-Wan said, "But let's not exploit it."

"That could be the title of your autobiography," Anakin commented.

"If I had an autobiography of any kind, which seems rather senseless," Obi-Wan said, "It would be called 'A Tale of Many Headaches'."

"There's no need to name it for me, Master," Anakin said. "It'll go straight to my head."

"Please," Obi-Wan said. "I was referring to Master Qui-Gon - perhaps Master Vos, as well, and... there were so many of you."

But he wasn't naming any further names. Too many dead.

Anakin's expression didn't change from his easy teasing, but he sent a pulse of reassurance and support through the Force.

He knew Obi-Wan well enough to sense where his thoughts had turned.

Obi-Wan rolled his eyes.

(That didn't mean he wasn't grateful. But still.)

"Let's have tea when this is done," he said. "I have a sudden craving."

Anakin's lips quirked up. "Sounds good."

"And then perhaps I can make you see the error of your ways regarding this particular incident."

"Well, you can try, Master," Anakin teased.

So over you, shitty African internet.
