Detention - Saturday 3/4

Lorelai is a lot of things, but a technological whiz is not one of them, so when students enter the Danger Shop on Saturday, it looks like... the Danger Shop. There were entirely too many buttons for her to figure out how to change it.

The list of names is on the board:

"Okay, gang, I don't know what you did to earn detention today, but I'm supposed to keep you busy all day. I planned, what I hope, are some fun activities that will also make you think about whatever it is that landed you here. You may talk quietly with each other while you complete these activites, as long as you are, indeed, working. If you're all behaved and you get everything done, you'll be dismissed at 5 pm ~~EST~~ FHT. If you're not behaved, well, from what I understand, I can keep you here all night."

[ocd up! I'll be on and off throughout the day. I moved last week and still have ~~all~~ some unpacking to do. I also have plans to go out to dinner with my roommate and a couple friends. Help yourself to coffee and donuts.

Don't mind the wistful looks Lorelai is giving you as she drinks her herbal tea and munches on fruit.

"As a thank you to Mr. MacGyver for letting us use the Danger Shop today, our first activity is going to be one that shows our appreciation. I bought a bunch of hammers and screwdrivers. Your job is to spruce them up so they're pretty. There are a bunch of scraps of fabric, ribbon, lace, and plenty of glitter. Go wild."

"Our next activity also involves appreciation, but it's music appreciation. The stuff you guys listen today is atrocious, so I'm going to educate you on one of the finer decades of music. The 80s."

Lorelai pulls out a collection of CDs and plays a variety of music from the 80s, including The Bangles, Culture Club, Heart, and The Violent Femmes.

"I'd like you to write a 100 word essay comparing and contrasting music of the 80s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980s_music_groups) and music of today. And if you're one of those weird space kids, or a time traveler, or something, then compare what you just heard with the music from wherever or whenever you're from. And if you're from the 80s, you don't have to do the essay, just come talk to me."

At precisely one o'clock, a delivery boy shows up with a variety of take out containers from Luke's.

"Lunch break, guys," Lorelai says. "You can talk while you eat and if you want, I'll play you more 80s music."

"Okay, lunch is over. Back to work."

Lorelai stands in front of the room.

"As you've no doubt noticed, I am expecting a baby this July. We found out a few weeks ago that it's a boy. We have not decided on a name yet. My husband and I are giving the honor of naming the baby to my daughter, Rory, who some of you might know because she's a student here. In order to make this easier on her, I'd like you all to come up with a list of ten possible baby names that I can give her."

[ooc: In case you don't know GG canon, wackier is better with Lor. She named her dog Paul Anka. She named Luke's toolbox Bert. She named Rory "Lorelai" after herself because she was all doped up and couldn't think of anything else.]

"Last activity and then you guys will be free to do whatever it is you kids do on Saturday nights."

Lorelai wheels in a TV/DVD player.

"You're going to watch The Breakfast Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Breakfast_Club), which is a movie about a bunch of high school students with Saturday detention. After the movie, I want you to write a 100 essay reflecting on whatever it is you did to earn this detention and telling me why you're sorry you did it."

[ooc: yeah, I know none of you earned it, so have fun with this!]

Assuming there hasn't been any trouble and all the activities have been completed...

Lorelai stands up at five. "Okay, gang, you're dismissed. Enjoy your spring break!"

Paige signs in, still thinking she's in here for being emo, she's given up all hope of ever having another free Saturday again, damn that stupidly hot poet.

She does take coffee and donuts though, cos she might as well make the best of it.

Paige sticks her hand up, "you want us to pretty up tools?" she asks with a highly confused expression.

*glees for being able to write about Depeche Mode and Billy Idol*

Peter signed in, then grabbed some coffee and a couple donuts. He also gave a sympathetic look due to the tea.

"Yep," Lorelai says with a grin. "Just because they're tools, doesn't mean they can't be pretty."

[ooc: this is totally a canon thing and if I had my computer set up, I would cap you a pic of the hammer Lor made Rory when she did one of those house building community service things.]

Wow. It was very clear that Rory was this woman's daughter. Peter was just glad that he wouldn't have to face the shop teacher after this.

He tied a blue ribbon around a hammer and the part of him that was a manly man (not dirty) pouted woefully inside his head. But the rest of him was kind of laughing.

Lorelai looks at the hammer.

"Okay, Peter, that's a good start," she tells him. "How about some glitter? Or maybe puffy paints?"

Paige just shrugs, "okay no problem," she replies searching through the materials for some silver ribbon.

((I really have to start watching this, if they show it in the UK ever!))

Draco signs in. He can't believe he's in detention for no reason. Could be worse, he could be on that trip to England. Then he would have to see his family. Yikes.

Draco takes a hammer and begins to sprinkle glitter on it. This was kind of fun. In a totally unmasculine way.

Peter grabbed some glitter. "I'm just very glad that I don't have shop," Peter said with a grin. Peter cringed slightly as he sprinkled some glitter on the hammer.

Not because of the glitter specifically. He just had a random thought of fighting a guy made of glitter. That would suck. He'd find glitter on himself months later. And he had just thought the word "glitter" way too many times.

Draco begins to write an essay comparing Heart to the Weird Sisters from home:

I noticed that the muggle (human) band Heart sounds a lot like a band we have in our world called the Weird Sisters. Both bands have women as lead singers. And they both have a gritty sound to them...

Draco eats lunch silently. He remembered that one of his first dates with Lily was at Lukes. Oh the emo.

Draco sticks a pen in his mouth and begins to think of name. Of course he is familar with giving kids wizardly names.

Draco was still amazed by muggle movies. And this movie is one of the best he had seen. He vows one day he will be as cool and badass as Bender.

When he wrote his essay he remembered that he didn't do anything to be here. So he decided to have fun with it and make up an excuse for being here.

I am here in detention today because I got caught streaking through the hallways. I am a very good looking man and I thought the school would benefit from seeing me in all my glory. But I made the mistake of singing Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" at the top of my lungs while I was doing it which led to me being caught. I am sorry that I decided to show the human form the way god intended it in a school. I will choose a more appropriate place to run around naked next time.

Peter wasn't actually very big on music ~~what with being from an action-oriented series in a silent medium~~, although he had recently started listening to some punk for no specific reason, really. Therefore, he didn't really have anything to say in this essay. Fortunately, he also tended not to have much to say in his newspaper articles and journalism essays, but had an ability to stretch any thought out up to three times longer than was fully necessary ~~thank Bendis~~.

In general, music from the 80s is much more earnest than the music of today, even if that earnestness is covered up by synthesizers. Back then, music had a meaning that was often thinly veiled. The Police were all about stalking. The Vapors really liked their alone time. Billy Joel liked playing the piano, man. Okay, two out of three isn't bad.

Today's music - with a few notable exceptions, such as Rob Thomas's crappy but endearingly earnest "Ever the Same" - often just is what it is. The surface level is all there is to the song. Just look at Britney Spears. Her songs generally have no point. That's not atypical at this point.

Peter counted his words. 115. On something he didn't have an opinion of. He was pleased with this result.
