Anakin's weekend had been...eventful...and while the first person to mention his gremlin bite experience were getting detention (you too, Obi-Wan), in general he was in a much better mood than normal. Seeing old friends did that for him. "Hello again," he said, leaning against the desk with his mug of black coffee.

"We hope you've all recovered from the weekend," Obi-Wan said easily. His own weekend had been rather uneventful. "Today, we'd like to talk about the concept of mercy, and how it weighs up against justice."

"As Jedi, we were often called on to deal with matters of justice and mercy," Anakin said, nodding. "But a decision doesn't have to have planetary consequences. Say your roommate was eating your leftovers. It's stealing, and illegal, but calling the troopers downtown might be considered a bit of an overreach. You have to temper justice with mercy--understanding the circumstances that led your roommate to take your things." Anakin shrugged. "If he did it just to be a jerk, then call the cops on him."

Very helpful, Anakin.

"However, perhaps he was new and hungry, and unused to food being in such bountiful supply," Obi-Wan said. He gave a wave with his hand. "Take this to a different circumstance, however. Perhaps food is scarce. He has already eaten his allotment, but is still hungry and decides to dig into your supplies. Then what?"

"If I remember correctly, you replied 'Anakin, you do not have a hollow leg and you won't starve before breakfast. Put that back right now,'" Anakin said. His Obi-Wan impression was a bit uncanny.

Obi-Wan cleared his throat. Loudly. "What would your jugdment be?" he asked. Pointedly.

"Perhaps food is scarce. He has already eaten his allotment, but is still hungry and decides to dig into your supplies. Then what?"

"I wouldn't let him eat my stuff but I doubt I'd call anyone," Jasper said. He had some very strong feelings about cops but didn't see this as that big a deal. "I'd make him stop myself."

He had his ways.

"How would you make him stop?" Anakin asked. "On a scale of Obi-Wan's response to killing the guy."

That's a pretty big range, Anakin.

"Depends on how willing the guy is to listen to reason," he answered, shrugging. "Threats, if I have to. Asking nicely, if I can."

"Start at one and escalate, maybe?" Anakin suggested. "Or are you a one offense and done guy?"

"Probably the former," Jasper said though he knew some people that could make him be the latter. "Give 'em a chance."

Anakin nodded, a faint smile on his face. "Good choice."

"That would depend on how hungry I am," Merrill decided. "I wouldn't mind sharing, but it wouldn't be very nice for him to have done that without asking."

Which was to say she might wibble at him.

That could very possibly be punishment enough.

"So if you were terribly hungry," Obi-Wan said lightly, "How would you handle it?"

"Oh, well, I might get upset then, and hide the rest somehow, or find a way to protect it," Merrill said, though it might have been hard for anyone to visualize her actually angry.

Isabela shrugged. "He can ask or he can see how it tastes with a broken nose."

Anakin snickered. "That's what I would do too," he admitted. "Well, not with my children, obviously, but for others."

"I'm hardly some moral authority." Being amongst other things, a pirate, thief, and daughter of a charlatan. "But I have scruples. Stealing from people with as little or less than you is just low. Plus if things are that desperate, stealing from anyone is just going to make things harder for everyone."

Anakin nodded. "We're not here to judge your moral authority," he said. "We're just trying to help you find your own line for right and wrong."

Hopefully way before "kill a bunch of children." Ahem.

"Well, first I'd have to make sure it was actually him and not his sister's pig," Lottie said thoughtfully. Pigs were much harder to reason with, after all. "Then I'd probably j'accuse! him. It's mostly non-violent, but still very effective when it comes to shamecations."

Obi-Wan... blinked.

"'J'accuse'?" he said. "You may wish to elaborate on that."

"If he's nice about it, I might share some," Gwen said. "If he's not, he gets punched."

"Do you and Isabela spend a lot of time together?" Anakin asked, chuckling. "That was her answer, too."

"I'd like to subscribe to her newsletter," Gwen said. Between Sex Ed class and this, they should probably be friends.

Anakin looked a little confused before realizing that Isabela probably didn't have a newsletter.

"Right."

"If that was his reasoning, I would still be annoyed that he was stealing, but I'd then try to share what I had with him."
