"Today," Lito declared, "I would like for everyone to pair up and have an argument. I don't care what it's about, as long as it is suitable for the classroom, and you must keep it going. Try to select a topic you don't actually care about that much, or a position you disagree with. Arguing about something you care about already is easy, no? That's cheating. First person to break character loses. Any questions? No? Let's get started, then."

"It's a valuable life skill," Anders told her, trying hard not to smile but not succeeding particularly well. "You can't expect to get anywhere if you don't cackle well, that's what I always say."

This was not what they were supposed to be talking about, was it?

It wasn't, but that's okay. Kathy had an idea.

"Oh really?" she challenged. "I can understand the value in pretending to cry, but a cackle? Who needs that?"

"You're daft, woman," Anders shot back, folding his arms. "Sobbing just makes you look weak.A good cackle shows you know you have the upper hand."

He hoped he'd been right in guessing what she was on about, or he had just sounded utterly mad.

"There's nothing weak about manipulating other people's emotions," Kathy contested. "What does cackling leave you with, other than side-eyes and uneasy glances?"

"It makes people think you're a loony!" Kathy said, rolling her eyes at him. "While, sure, sobbing might look weak, but then they underestimate you! It puts you in the perfect position!"
