Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could work on their tan while they ate, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool and non-crispy.

All of the tables had some blue and gold glitter scattered across them, because there was always enough to go around. This school certainly was blesesed in all the right ways.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Not really but I haven't done much more than stand here," Nathan admitted. "Crowds aren't really my favorite thing to be around. I try to keep my distance."

"This is a pretty terrifying mob," Anders teased, waving a hand vaguely toward the crowd. "You're wise to keep your distance. Someone might make you eat a cookie."

Nathan shrugged, glancing at the crowd and then taking a sip of his drink. "I know it's stupid but it's just not really my thing, no matter how nice everyone is. I prefer my space."

"I know," Anders said, more seriously. "And the fact everybody's carrying around a buzzing headache box doesn't help you either."

Which was where he checked his phone in his pocket to make sure he'd remembered to shut it off. (He had.)

"You aren't being stupid. I think you get points just for coming instead of staying in the Preserve and ignoring it."

Nathan nodded and the side of his head even though he had no headache right now. If he got too much closer, he would but he was fine right now.

"Have you seen anyone or anything interesting?"

"Two more people from home," Anders said, grinning at it. "A Dalish elf and a girl from Rivain who doesn't seem to like wearing pants. Didn't get to talk to either of them much, but I swear we're taking over."

"Wow," Nathan said, blinking a few times. He didn't know what he'd do if people from his home showed up. Unless it was Arran, Gabriel or Annalise, it probably wouldn't be good. "They're not gonna be watching you like you're some criminal too, are they?"

"They'd better not," Anders said grimly. He could tolerate Cassandra, but the fact there was only one of her helped immensely on that count. "But I'd be surprised if they did. The elf wouldn't believe in the Chant, and the other girl's from a place where they treat mages like people."

"I wonder if she'll try and corral them as well," Nathan said thoughtfully. "Use her complete lack of authority as best she can here."

"Is it terrible I'd like to see her try?" Anders wondered. "Maybe if there were three of us completely refusing to listen, she'd give up on it faster."

Or she'd bring in an Exalted March, but Anders preferred not to think that way.

"I don't know if I'd like to see her try because what if she succeeds?" Nathan shook his head. "Maybe she'll just leave you alone. Leave everyone alone."

"She can't succeed," Anders said grimly. He liked he life too much to sacrifice it to some grudge match. "...but it would be much nicer if she wouldn't even try, yes."

"Is that a possibility?" Nathan wondered, more thinking out loud than asking a serious question. "I just don't understand her need to police you. You haven't done anything bloody wrong."

"I was born with powers in her world," Anders said. "Terrible mistake. I won't make it again."

More seriously, he added: "It's her religious duty,as she sees it. Why they think the Maker would give me powers and then not want me to use them isn't something I've ever understood."

Nathan grimaced. "I hate people who just blindly do what their told without knowing the other people involved. It's stupid. It's bloody stupid."

It reminded him strongly of the Council and his feelings on those people were not good.

"I don't understand why so many people do it," Anders nodded. "You'd think sooner or later they would realize it hurt actual people. Suppose that's why they try so hard not to get to know us."

"I'm sorry you have to deal with it," Nathan told him quietly. "Maybe something'll happen and she'll ease up. She needs to understand that not everything's black and white."

"Maybe," Anders said, not sure he believed it. "If all the time she spent here hasn't changed her mind, I'm not sure what will."

Hesitantly, he added, "Mages killed her brother. I think that's part of it, too."

Nathan shook his head.

"I can understand why she might not like you but she shouldn't try and act like you're some piece of property that she can take back like luggage. You weren't one of the mages that hurt her brother."
