Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could work on their tan while they ate, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool and non-crispy.

All of the tables had some blue and gold glitter scattered across them, because there was always enough to go around. This school certainly was blesesed in all the right ways.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

She was all innocence and the desire was there, though brief, to crush it down. He pushed that dark thought away as he did many others throughout each day. It wasn't her fault.

"Sounds like you like it here," he said, avoiding most of the talk about how he'd been watching people. It was true, he knew, and he'd continue to watch people like that. Couldn't help it.

That was okay, Illumi never stopped either.

"I do," she said happily. "I get to leave my room and I get to have friends and eat candy and go on lots of trips!"

A beat.

"Do you like it here?"

Okay, Jasper couldn't help but pause when she said she got to leave her room. His childhood hadn't been typical at all and it'd messed him up for life but he'd at least had some freedom.

"It's better than some places I've been," he answered with a shrug. "I like where I'm from and I want to go back but I can manage here for a little while longer."

She nodded wisely.

Because this was Alluka, how wise she actually was was... seriously up for debate.

"What you need are friends to make this place even better then," she decided. "I'm going to be one."

No, he wasn't getting a say in it.

"I'm Alluka!"

Jasper chuckled at her boldness. He tended to keep people at a distance for good reason but he'd never really met anyone who just decided to be his friend.

"Jasper," he replied. "What makes you think I'd be good friend material?"

Alluka beamed back at him. She'd made him laugh! Or close enough to it, anyway.

"Well," she said, trying to sort through all the messages people had given to her about friends. "Because everyone can be a good friend and, if they're not, then that just means they need more practice and that's okay."

Oh, she was so innocent. Jasper almost hated that her innocence and outlook would probably be destroyed one day. There weren't people like this around him.

"I don't really know if practice will help me but it doesn't sound like I can stop you from trying to be my friend. You sound determined."

"I am," she said, and nodded. Then she looked at him uncertainly. "If, if that's okay?"

"It's fine," Jasper said because he didn't have the heart to tell her otherwise. His father's voice was ringing in his head, encouraging him to obliterate her trust in him but Jasper was steadfastly ignoring it.

"If it's what you want, it's fine with me."

"I want it!" she said, beaming at him again. "And now that we're friends--have you been to the food table yet? There's so much chocolate!"

A beat.

"And other stuff, too, if you don't like it."

"I stopped by to get something to drink but no food," he told her, shaking his head. "You eaten a lot of the chocolate over there, then?"

"Ye-es," she admitted, giggling. "And Elsa and I ate a bunch of fruit with it too and Kathy made me eat a salad."

It was probably good someone cared about what she ate.

"You eat too much more and you're stomach's gonna ache," Jasper remarked with a small snicker. "And that's not any kind of fun no matter how good the food tastes so be careful."
