Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could work on their tan while they ate, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool and non-crispy.

All of the tables had some blue and gold glitter scattered across them, because there was always enough to go around. This school certainly was blesesed in all the right ways.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Don't worry, Alluka. Because Kathy had been keeping an eye out for pinks and frills and dark hair for just that reason. They were at a picnic, there was plenty of food, Alluka was going to eat several food groups today, dammit.

"Hi," she said, when she made her way over to Alluka and her personal mountain of chocolate. "Having a good picnic?"

"Kathy! Kathy, look at all the people! Aren't they amazing!" Alluka burbled happily, beaming up at Kathy.

"I love picnics!"

"A bunch of new people, even," Kathy agreed, grinning. Alluka's cheer was infectious. "You've got seniority now, you know. Because you've been here for a whole term already. Now they're the newbies and you've got all the experience."

She gave Bunny a nod of greeting. Just to be polite.

And her bunny gave a happy flail back in Kathy's direction! Stuffed bunnies were friendly!

Alluka's eyes went big. "I've got seniority?"

Did that mean she was in charge? Did that mean she got to decide that they had parties all the time and got to eat all the chocolate and mean that all the new people were going to be her bestest friends?

... Alluka maybe didn't know what having seniority meant.

Even if Alluka did have seniority, Kathy still had seniority on her, which meant vegetables, darnit.

"You do," Kathy agreed. "Just a bit. Because you've been here longer and so you know a little more about the island than they do. You've been in the school and met some of the teachers--you might even be older than some of the new kids."

Theoretically, anyway.

Very theoretically, yes.

She giggled, and yeah, there were definitely no vegetables anywhere near Mount Chocolate. "I should tell them to all take the fun classes!"

And ignore the boring, educational ones!

ALLUKA WHY DID YOU LIVE TO BE THE ANTITHESIS OF EVERYTHING KATHY LOVED?!

And there were to vegetables near Mount Chocolate! Kathy was stealthily bringing them closer for the inevitable veggie-vasion, in which Alluka ate something with nutrients in it.

"What classes are those?" she asked. "What have you signed up for?"

BECAUSE SHE LOVED YOU, KATHY. BECAUSE OF LOVE.

Alluka let herself be steered, since that was... uh... sort of her default for life, why yes. She ate some chocolate while she thought.

"I've got Jono and Hannibal's class," she said happily, after a moment. "And Pinkie's field trip class! And those are all I signed up for but I got a third one too from somewhere and I don't really get the description, but maybe it'll be fun?"

"I'll be in Pinkie's with you," Kathy said, automatically making a note to pack an extra lunch for Alluka to have or save. Peanut butter and jelly was an acceptable compromise between Kathy's desire for nutrition and Alluka's sweet tooth, right? "Do you remember what the third one is?"

It probably was, yes.

"Yay! I'll already know someone then!" Alluka had a quick, whispered conversation with her bunny before announcing, "We think the third class started with an 'E'."

"Ethics?" Kathy asked, running through the course list in her head. She was pretty sure that Ethics was the only one she remembered starting with an E. "It's a good class to help you come up with your idea of right and wrong."

"I think that's it," Alluka said, brightening up at how smart Kathy was. She was super smart to know that just from the first letter! "Is it fun?"

Alluka's priorities!

"Umm, well...I had fun?" Kathy said, well aware that her fun was no most people's idea of fun. "Here," she added, pushing a plate with a hot dog, some garden salad and a bit of potato salad a little closer to Alluka. "Could you eat some of this while I think about how to explain Ethics better?"

"Okay," Alluka said simply, since it wasn't like she didn't like any of what was on the plate that Kathy put near her. It just wasn't chocolate. "If it will help you think."

Yes.

Alluka eating was clearly the key to Kathy's thinking. Her bunny nodded solemnly.

Good job, Bunny. Way to have Kathy's back on that.

And while Alluka ate, Kathy would be doing the same from her own plate. Where she'd put much the same things on there, so they'd be eating together.

"Ethics is all about asking hard questions that you don't always know the answers to," she said slowly. "Not hard questions like math or literature, but questions about what you'd do in a situation. Like..." Kathy looked around for inspiration. "Like if you would...tell someone scary where I was hiding, if the scary person offered you all the chocolate you could eat in a day. You know I don't want to go with the scary guy, but it is a lot of chocolate he's offering."

Oooooh. That was a hard one.

Alluka chewed on a forkful of salad and thought about that.

"Could I lie and say you were somewhere and get the chocolate and still have you be not with the scary person?"

"That's definitely something you can do," Kathy told her. "And it's a creative way to solve the problem. And that's what Ethics is--finding out what you would do, compared to what you won't. Like..." She decided to change the scenario a bit. "What if the scary guy came as told you to show him where I was hiding or else he'd take away all your chocolate. Then what would you do?"

"Probably cry," Alluka admitted, because she had the coping skills of a sheltered child, for obvious reasons. "And, and maybe call for Jono. He promised to come running if I was ever scared."

And the last thing Kathy was going to do was tell Alluka that that wasn't an acceptable answer to the question. It worked for her, and that was good enough for Kathy.

"When I took it, Ethics class was pretty much like this," she said. "Asking questions about what you would do and figuring out the reasons why you answered that way. It's like a way to know yourself better."

And it wasn't even selling out Kathy for a pile of chocolate! See? She loved Kathy!

"That could be pretty fun," she decided, smiling a little. "Not as fun as field trips though."

That was some love and Kathy was going to give Alluka a hug for it, if she was amenable. "Maybe not," Kathy conceded. "But still important. Especially since you already get a fun field trip class!"

With friends, even!

Alluka loved hugs! And always was amendable!

"Truuue," she said, then laughed. "I might have two! Jono's class has the same name from last class and that was all 'go look at fun things and then make stuff after!'"

"See? Then you're all set," Kathy said. "Two fun classes where you get to explore the world, and one class where you get to explore yourself. That sounds like a fair compromise, right?"
