BWI Airport, Portalocity Lounge

It was That Time Of Year again. At BWI airport, they knew well that this was not the kind of thing you wanted to be asking questions about. So when a teenage boy showed up wearing a ratty long red-and-black coat, an expression that blazed hell and a large series of bleeding scratches on his face, well, they didn't ask. About anything.

Dante didn't mind. It meant he could walk into the nice warm Portalocity lounge and crash on one of the benches. Had to sleep off the day he'd had... yesterday? Was it yesterday now? Who cared.

By the time he jerked back awake about an hour later, the scratches had vanished and his expression had gone sleepy, though the ratty coat remained. He sat up, rubbing at his eyes. Guess he wasn't alone anymore, huh? Fine, whatever. "Who knew the public still showed up for transport?"

And Wash was not a weirdo for wearing his armor. He was merely thinking ahead to the safety of the incoming class.

You're welcome, kids.

He was also less surly looking by virtue of no one being able to see his face. So. Go him.

Yeah, because that armor was totally reassuring.

"Swear to god, you even look like you might point a weapon at these kids and I'm throwing you into the harbor."

The harbor was nowhere near BWI. This would not stop Eliot.

"The lack of trust is hurtful, Eliot," Wash replied. Because 'that'd be fun to see' wasn't how you responded when you were a mature adult.

"You're the one who decided it was a good idea to prep for pickin' up a bunch of new students by wearin' body armor."

Yeah, Eliot wasn't disagreeing with the 'lack of trust' bit.

"I really don't see how this is more traumatizing than a talking pony," Wash replied. "It's just armor. For space. From the future."
vdistinctive: (resigned-face)

Re: The Trip to Fandom

[personal profile] vdistinctive 2015-08-28 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Eliot hadn't actually claimed it was more traumatizing. Just earlier traumatizing.

"You understand you're not in space anymore, right?"

"Yeah, but I like to breath air that's not smoggy."

So the helmet was staying on.

Eliot couldn't really argue with that one.

"You think this is smoggy? You should try Beijing."

That didn't mean he wasn't going to try.

Wash was a terrible coworker.

"Hey, I like your armor," April chirped as she headed to board the bus with her huge amount of luggage. "Wait, is it armor? Or are you, um, a robot? Not to be rude!"

She wasn't judging. Probably lots of people were robots.

Re: The Trip to Fandom

[identity profile] worstofalltime.livejournal.com 2015-08-29 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
"No, I'm not a robot," Wash said in the same tone as someone who had answered that question far too many times. "I'm a teacher and yes, it's armor."

Space armor.

"Well, it's neat!" April said encouragingly. "Sorry if that was rude! It's probably not a good first day move to suggest that a teacher might be a robot. But my best friend from home is really into robots. She'd really like your armor, too. What's it for?"

Just keep babbling, April. There you go.

That was more than enough to sound impressive. "Does it help with bus travel? Or are you just kinda breaking it in?"

No judgment if he was wearing it just for fun. Sometimes April wore new sandals on cooler days just because they were new. She understood the appeal.

Re: The Trip to Fandom

[identity profile] worstofalltime.livejournal.com 2015-08-29 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm breaking it in," Wash said. "These are just the right circumstances to test these things out."

His sarcasm was all present.

"That's cool," April said, breezing right on past the sarcasm almost like she didn't notice. "My camp counselor this summer was always trying out new projects and stuff too. Mostly plant foraging techniques, but there was some basic weaponry."

Only where necessary for self-defense, of course.

"I hope the test goes how you want it!"

Re: The Trip to Fandom

"I'm sure it will," Wash assured her. "And try to keep your basic weaponry away from your classmates.

Especially the drunk one.

Heh.
