BWI Airport, Portalocity Lounge

It was That Time Of Year again. At BWI airport, they knew well that this was not the kind of thing you wanted to be asking questions about. So when a teenage boy showed up wearing a ratty long red-and-black coat, an expression that blazed hell and a large series of bleeding scratches on his face, well, they didn't ask. About anything.

Dante didn't mind. It meant he could walk into the nice warm Portalocity lounge and crash on one of the benches. Had to sleep off the day he'd had... yesterday? Was it yesterday now? Who cared.

By the time he jerked back awake about an hour later, the scratches had vanished and his expression had gone sleepy, though the ratty coat remained. He sat up, rubbing at his eyes. Guess he wasn't alone anymore, huh? Fine, whatever. "Who knew the public still showed up for transport?"

"You're the one who decided it was a good idea to prep for pickin' up a bunch of new students by wearin' body armor."

Yeah, Eliot wasn't disagreeing with the 'lack of trust' bit.

"I suppose someone's gotta start the traumatizin' process on these kids."

"I really don't see how this is more traumatizing than a talking pony," Wash replied. "It's just armor. For space. From the future."

Eliot hadn't actually claimed it was more traumatizing. Just earlier traumatizing.

"You understand you're not in space anymore, right?"

"Yeah, but I like to breath air that's not smoggy."

So the helmet was staying on.

Eliot couldn't really argue with that one.

"You think this is smoggy? You should try Beijing."

That didn't mean he wasn't going to try.

"Yeah, there's a reason we're colonizing planets on the ass end of the galaxy," Wash replied slowly.

"Because we're not done fucking planets up?"

"I'm an ex-mercenary who cons bad guys in his spare time," Eliot said. "I've never been proud of humanity."

"Ah, welcome to the club," Wash replied cheerfully. "Just wait, in a few generations, going to the moon will be boring."

Wash was a terrible coworker.

Wash turned and stared at him. "You are an even bigger buzzkill than I am. I didn't even think that was possible. I really didn't."

It helped that Wash was secretly a giant dork and cat lady under all that trauma.

"Sorry." Eliot didn't sound sorry in the least. "Never been the jolly member of my team."

You should have seen him play Santa Claus.

God help you if you ever met any of the Reds or Blues, Eliot. It would end in tears.

Especially if it's Caboose.

"No, no. I'm just sort of in awe of that."

Yeah, but whose tears?

"What, I've finally managed to impress you?"

One of these days, his team would probably end up running a job to refund moon missions. Just on general principle. But Eliot wasn't going to bring that up now.

Hey. Making Caboose cry was like making a teamkilling kitten cry. Not cool, man.

"Through sheer force of your misanthropy, yes."
