Adventuring!, Thursday, Period 3

For the last class, like the first, the Danger Shop was set up to look like Ye Old-Timey Fantasy Tavern, because Hardison did love him some tropes, and 'getting an adventure hook in a tavern' was one of the oldest.

"I'm looking for some adventurers!" an old man announced a few minutes after class began. "A small band of the most brave and stalwart! Monsters have moved into the cave system nearby the village and are terrorizing our outlying farms! There's gold and treasure in it for anyone who can make our town safe again!"

Once the old man sat back down, Hardison stood up. "That's your final, class," he said. "You can work alone, though it might be easier to go in a group or somethin'. Head to the caves, defeat some monsters, an' enjoy the sweet reward of treasure." And a good grade, but whatever. "So figure out what class you wanna be from the ones we went over this session, decide who you're gonna team up with, if anyone, an' enjoy your taste of fantasy adventure!"

The Tavern

Get a drink, listen to the bard (who bears a strong resemblance to the grumpy bartender from the first day of class), talk to one another, and then listen to your assignment from class.

Get Dressed Up!

All the outfits from the past few weeks are available here for you to choose from. Pick a costume and accoutrements appropriate to the class you want to be (fighter, mage, or rogue), and let Hardison know what you've decided on. If you've chosen a class that casts spells, he'll tell you which spells you have.

Despite how much more comfortable she was in light armor, Kira decided to be a fighter. The idea of having a sword and shield was just too cool to ignore.

Kaylin was definitely a fighter. One of the non-fussy, comfortable-dressing, daggers and staff kind.

"Kaylin, hey girl!" Hardison said, giving her a smile. "So, what class are you today?"

He wasn't quite sure whether she was going for rogue or fighter, honestly.

Excelsior!

Once you're ready to go, the tavern door opens to a dirt road leading into a dark wood. Set off alone or choose to band together, either way there's adventure waiting.

As with any proper RPG, while the most obvious way through most obstacles is fighting, Hardison has set up the sim so that any smart or creative use of skills can have a decent result.

The Dark Wood

This is an old forest, with tall trees that heavily filter the sunlight. There's also a great deal of underbrush, making visibility difficult. The road is clear and well-maintained, however, letting you travel without difficulty.

For awhile all seems well, until there's a thunderous crashing through the underbrush ahead and suddenly a great grizzly bear appears on the road ahead of you. It roars when it sees you and it's teeth and claws look very sharp.

On one hand, Kira felt bad about hurting a bear - she'd probably scared it! - but it was also threatening to eat her, so her guilt only lasted long enough for her to get her sword out. She gave it as quick and painless a death as she could, poor bear.

The Caves

Once you get past the bear, you continue on until you see the cave the old man spoke of. From the outside, the cave looks rather small and unassuming, but within, you can see it's part of much bigger subterranean system. No natural light comes in, but there are some remains of old torches and the like if you don't have a way of producing light on your own.

Heading further in and down, you can hear the noises made by something living. The monsters seem to have made their home in a cavern by a small underground lake. Towards the back of their cavern, you can see two large treasure chests with heavy padlocks on the front.

The number of monsters you see depend on the number of people with you. Someone by themselves will only see one monster, a larger group may see several.

Sure, there was only one monster, but it was big and ugly. Thankfully, Kira had done a little studying, and if she was going to have a spell on hand thanks to her deity, it was totally going to be Thunderous Strike. Hopefully the sound of thunder wouldn't freak anyone else out.

The Treasure

After the monsters have been taken care of, all that's left is to get your treasure!

Like the torches, the chests appear to be very old, here long before the monsters moved in. Both boxes are sturdy, built of wood, and reinforced in places with iron. However, if you touch the chest on the left, you discover it's not actually a chest at all, but a mimic!

Once the mimic has been dealt with, the chest on the right appears to be an ordinary chest. But what's inside?

Open it and find out.

Ew ew ew why did it have to be something slimy? Kira was glad she wasn't super attached to her armor, because she ended up getting close to the mimic to slice it to its doom.

When she opened the chest, she found 30 gold coins and an empty glass vial that smelled like perfume when she opened it. Hurray for loot!

Back to the Tavern

Hopefully with prizes in hand, students who have finished the adventure will exit the caves and find themselves right back at the tavern. As returning heroes, they'll find plenty to eat and drink and can spend the last few minutes of class relaxing.

Raven hung to one side, waiting to see if anyone wanted a partner for adventure but couldn't find one, and otherwise enjoying the simulated atmosphere.
