"Right." Bob shook his head. "So apparently a number of you were involved in that whole 'alien abduction' thing last week. I didn't bother with class, so you didn't miss anything."

Because they were probably really concerned about that, right?

"This week, we're moving on from the physical issues involved in incantations and on to the actual act of reading. Sort of." He turned around and wrote a number of words in the air:

He waited.

After they'd given it a go, Bob stepped back up. "Notice how many different ways there are to say some of these things?" he asked them. "Never assume you know the correct pronunciations of strange words, simply because they look like something in your language." He waved at the glowing words. "These are all nonsense, of course, but magic generally won't be. Just because you look at it and it looks familiar, don't assume it is. Research is your friend.

"In this case, the point isn't to learn any one language - it's to make yourselves aware of the assumptions you make already. So today, if you said something one way, and someone else said it differently, find out why. How might your assumptions mislead you? Discuss."

Gibberish-looking words were Mabel's thing! She'd once sent the dastardly leader of a diabolical secret society on his merry way thinking that his name was Toot-Toot McBumbersnazzle.

She had this handled.

... Mabel didn't know if it meant anything at all (and it probably didn't, but she was going to mentally come to the conclusion that it was the word for that feeling people got when they burped and could feel cola bubbles at the back of their nose), but 'fibegirdly' was probably going to be her new favorite word for the foreseeable future.

Or until a new random string of syllables came together that made her giggle as much as saying that one did.

Anders amused himself during class coming up with rude definitions for the nonsense words.

"Swelized" was his favorite. It referred to the stickiness on skin after pleasant physical exertions.
