Sneaking 101, Thursday

There was no Atton this week. Just Ezra. Also the Danger Shop was programmed to look like a movie theater. So if your immediate guess was that this week's session would be easy, you were absolutely one hundred percent correct.

"Hey," Ezra said, waving lazily from where he was slouched in a seat near the back. "Atton's not here, so I'm in charge. And that means we're giving the actual sneaking a pass this week. It's just as important to see what other people are doing sometimes, you know?"

He didn't know, really. He was just being lazy.

"So without further hassle, sit down and enjoy our feature presentation of the day."

Tali lifted her head slowly and turned to look, then nodded once in a gesture of appreciation.

"Not really, but I will be," she said in a low voice. There was too much to do for her to dwell on this too long, which was about the last thing Shepard would want any of them to do anyway. "Thanks. How did you -- keelah, the squirrels. Right."

She didn't sound upset about that -- you didn't really have much in the way of privacy living on a ship, especially in the Migrant Fleet, but she'd forgotten about the squirrels, who would probably be offended to be thought of as low-tech surveillance.

"Yeah, sorry," Kathy said. "They poke their noses into everything." Though now she was thinking she probably should have edited the broadcast a little, rather than just telling everyone about Tali's business. "You know Liara? The same Liara who went here?"

Then she blushed. "That's probably a really stupid question. I'm sorry. I shouldn't just be doing the whole, 'she's from space, you're from space, clearly you must know one another!' thing."

Tali didn't mind, really. Who didn't get bad news from time to time? Like on a day ending in Y, where she was from?

"You knew the one who went here?" she asked, a little more interested now -- distractions were good. "She's a lot younger than the Liara I know. Not the same one, or she would have known about this place when I told everyone where I was going, but . . . they are the same person. I still can't believe that makes sense somehow."

"Not very well," Kathy said quickly, since she didn't want to give Tali the wrong impression. "But I knew of her."

As their school didn't have an overabundance of blue alien girls running around and all.

"I mostly remember that she was incredibly smart."

Of course that had caught Kathy's attention.

"Well, it is a small island, and there aren't exactly a lot of asari living here, so . . ." Tali gave a little, tired-sounding chuckle. "That's Liara, all right. By the time I met her she was already considered one of the foremost experts in Prothean history, and she's only 106."

Asari and their lifespans, honestly. Only 106.

"Uhh..." Only 106? "Do you know what that equates out to in human years?"

Oh, right.

"Probably around 19 or 20?" Tali guessed. "Is that about when humans consider people adults?"

"About that, yeah," Kathy said nodding. "So...wow, good for her, being considering the foremost expert in her field at that young. By the time I'm that age, I'm mostly hoping to have a basic idea of what I want to do with the rest of my life, you know?"

"Tell me about it," Tali said wryly. "Most of us don't have the luxury of having a century to figure that out. Then again, we don't have that many options on the flotilla, so I guess it's harder for you."

"The flotilla?" Kathy asked. "I'm guessing that's where you're from?"

"It is. It's hard to say we're from a certain region of space when we travel around so much," Tali answered, waving a hand in a 'what are you going to do' gesture.

"Really?" Kathy asked, fascinated. Space! "One of my Fandom little brothers, Joker, was from another planet, but we spent more time talking about all the spaceships he was going to pilot one day than we did where he was from."

. . . and Tali burst out laughing.

"Keelah, you knew Joker, too? I knew some version of him was here."

"Ohmigosh, do you know everybody from space?"

Don't be silly, Kathy, some of those people were Skywalkers.

"Not even a little bit," Tali said, waving both hands. "And technically, you're all from space to me, too. It's such a strange coincidence, though, isn't it? Was he as sarcastic at that age as the one I know is?"

She'd be honestly shocked if the answer was no.

"The first time I heard him say something sincere, I nearly fell over in surprise," Kathy confirmed. "I think I knew him several months before it happened."
