Library, Thursday (July 30)

Yes, Cosette had noticed the strange new ship hanging about yesterday, and that had been curious enough, though admittedly her first impulse had been to go and explore the thing. That had proved futile. Then she'd heard the radio broadcast this morning, which made her feel better about not being able to explore the ship after all, or at least it did until the mayor got to mentioning that people had been disappearing.

As a library aide who took her duties seriously, not to mention someone who took looking after her fellow Fandomites just as seriously, she made sure to be up bright and early to get the library open and ready for people to come in. She also made sure to bring in a large tray of pastries from JGOB, and had plenty of coffee brewed and at the ready.

She would leave the computer work to the others, instead taking it upon herself to keep the card catalog in order and the coffee pot full, though she did pause every few minutes to dial a couple of numbers on her phone to no avail.

Actually, that probably explained why she was so intent on keeping those catalog cards in order, didn't it?

That might be harder than it sounded, since Face was tackling the cards against today to little avail.

Kira had never hacked before the lessons yesterday, so she was still struggling a little today. Her frustrations were mostly coming out in the form of grumbling about stupid aliens and their stupid code and their stupid stealing people with their stupid code.

Sometimes, the problem with being an engineer was that you started to think of things as operating at a certain level of complexity, and then when they didn't it threw your entire attempt at understanding them off. That had explained Tali's difficulties with the unfamiliar code yesterday.

Luckily, she was clever enough to know when to stop and try to look at the problem with a different mindset, so by this morning she was comfortable enough working with the code that she could do it without informing it that it was being difficult. Oh, she still had the occasional bit of half under-her-breath commentary, but more along the lines of "So that's the routine you use for that in this time?"

. . . geeking out, basically.

She was even humming softly to herself -- or along with the music she had playing over her suit's audio system, more accurately -- as she worked on her omni-tool, completely lost in the work, until she stumbled across, well . . . something. Some bit of code that didn't seem to be integrated somehow, or as refined as the rest of it, though it did look to be fully functional.

"Wait a second," she said out loud. "What is that for?"

She pulled it up on her omni-tool's display for closer examination, and deployed a subroutine to search for other, similar fragments.

"Huh. Looks like this is meant to augment other parts of the sim?"

Her omni-tool beeped to let her know her search was finished running, and she put the new fragments it had found up on her display beside the first one for comparison's sake.

They . . . looked not all that different from the sort of godmode cheat mods that got people banned from the Galaxy of Fantasy servers, not that she would know anything at all about that. Right. She'd already created a duplicate test environment for the code, so she switched over to that now and tried plugging the fragments in. And they worked.

"Ha!" she crowed, pumping a fist in the air. "We've got you now, bosh'tet!"

Okay, that might be a little premature, but look. Some people got their adrenaline levels going through physical activity. For Tali it was technical challenges. Don't you judge.

Did Kinzie look like she hadn't had much sleep? Well, she was a trooper. She knew 'not much sleep' like the back of her hand.

"Did any of you people go to bed last night?" she demanded. "Losers. Get back to work!"

Yeah, he was in his office. Possibly had just slept there to keep aliens from getting him, but whatever. He was around if people needed him.

God help you all.
