Fandom High Library [Weds, July 29]

John had been up for ages, really, or hadn't been to bed yet, one of the two. Either way, he had been out for a fag, looked up as he took that first, sweet drag, and... fucking hell.

He was going to have to open the bloody library to the public, wasn't he? And he'd been getting so much done in Special Collections on the days he didn't have aides to worry about.

He'd pulled on trousers and a shirt (thank (or curse) your god(s)) and stopped long enough to pick up a new pack of smokes and a box of donuts. Because fuck if he was going to start saving the world without breakfast.

The Fandom High Library was open, and the Librarian was in.

As soon as Skype was set up and hooked up to the internet, an image appeared of a redheaded woman in a large hoodie and wearing a set of glasses. She looked somewhat librarian-esque-- an impression that remained for just about as long as it took her to finally open her mouth.

"Hey, people!" she called. "You have an alien problem! I anticipated the alien problem-- though really I thought they'd be going for bigger targets-- either way, if only I'd gotten the budget that I-- anyway. If you already know how to hack into things, congratulations, here's what inroads I've managed to make into this big ship thing. It seems to be running some kind of simulation on the inside? I think that is where your people might be."

A window popped up next to the Skype window that held a ton of code.

"Go grab that code and get into that stupid ship. If you don't know how to code, congratulations, you're going to get a lesson from the world's biggest computer genius. Sit your ASSES DOWN!"

Because she was considerate and helpful, she'd repeat a version of this message three times before settling down to teach her new minions.

"Well now, if you're the teacher, I can be schooled," Constantine offered cheekily, kicking his feet up on a nearby table and balancing his laptop on his lap. She was a hot ginger with an attitude, of course he was going to flirt outrageously.

"Mind, I'm quite good with metadata what with this librarian gig, but hacking is a bit beyond my usual charming methods of stirring up shite."

"Do you at least know how to use a computer?" Kinzie asked, her eyes set pointedly on that laptop.

Though under other circumstances, she wasn't against doing any schooling.

"Sure. Mostly use it for research on the more spooky ends of the universe, but I can play Minecraft like any other self-respecting adult with too much time on his hands," he replied cheerfully. "Without paying for it, even."

WHAT?

"What piracy sites do you use?" Kinzie asked. "Because I can tell you which ones are being stalked by the FBI."

Kinzie, you had been FBI.

"Anyway, forget anything you have ever seen about hacking on TV. It's all bullshit. You need to know the nitty gritty of open source software, and you need to learn it within the next couple of hours."

"Your FBI spies on everything, especially when it's none of their bloody business," John scoffed, rolling his eyes. "It's like the clap, only there's no fucking cure."

"But lucky for you, oh Mistress of the the Computer, I'm a fast student. Teach, and I shall receive."

After establishing that people were, in fact, missing, Lottie had spent the rest of her morning going through the dorms and through town, finding abandoned pets and bringing them back to her room, where she could keep an eye on them.

She didn't make it to the library until mid-afternoon, and when she did she waved her hand at the webcam to get the attention of the Skype lady.

"Excuse me," she said. "I have a lot of questions for you."

Learning to hack would be amazing, but Lottie's mystery instincts were insisting on an interrogation, first.

"Of course you do," Kinzie sighed, "I have a ton of answers, but you actually have to listen to them instead of just firing off stupid questions and then running off to blow something up, okay?"

... She was used to the Boss.

Lottie blinked. "I'm guessin whoever it was who did that was very male," she said. "Okay, first off." She pulled out a little notebook. "How do you know about the aliens?"

"No, the President is just very... her."

A destructive megaloman-- uh, 'puckish rogue'.

"Simple. I've been hijacking satellites for a while now. Background chatter on some of the NASA ones has made it clear aliens were going to try and conquer us sooner rather than later. This morning all my programs started firing at once. Apparently the aliens were just really interested in Maryland."

Lottie chewed on the end of her pen. "Okay," she said. "And who exactly are you? Other than 'the world's biggest computer genius'."

"Kinzie Kensington. Ex-FBI, current Press Secretary to the White House," Kinzie said. "That's the least interesting part. Continue."

You could tell she made a fantastic press secretary. (Not really.)

"What assurances do we have that you are not an alien yourself, or part of a vast alien conspiracy in the American government?"

Lottie might be an expert at mysteries, but she was also still a fourteen year old.

"I could send you my full record of service with the FBI, but then they'd have to kill you," Kinzie said cheerfully, "So you're just going to have to roll with it, considering right now I'm the only one who has an opening into that thing's systems."

"Hmm." Lottie chewed on her pen again. "I s'pose you make a valid point. And you are offerin to teach us how to code." She smiled brightly. "Okay! Let's hack some aliens!"

"Let's hack some aliens!" Kinzie agreed. "Please tell me you know how to use a computer? Or at least program a VCR?"

Her standards were low.

"Pffft," Lottie said. "I am an internet native. I can send sixty texts a minute!"

She had never actually timed it. But she'd heard old timey secretaries talk like that before.

"You still use text messaging?" Kinzie groaned. "Okay. Grab an actual keyboard and sit down."
