Outdoor Adventure Time, Part 2 - Tuesday, Second Period

[Class #5 - The Down Low Job]

Class met up at the Portalocity office again this week, and without much ado stepped through onto a path in front of an unassuming cave entrance.

"We've been doing a lot of water stuff lately to try to beat the heat," Eliot said, as he unpacked a crate full of varying sized tan jumpsuits and helmets with headlamps on them. "So this week we're going with something different. Temperatures underground are between 50-55 degrees fahrenheit all year round, no matter what it's doing outside. So it should be a nice break from all the baking we've been doing back in Fandom."

“Hope you took us seriously about the boots. And the leggings,” Parker added, looking delighted. She calmed down a little and said, “Helmets are non-optional this week. And if you have claustrophobia or nictophobia, we need to hear about it now. We’re not traumatizing anyone in this class.”

"Anyone who can't or won't go into the cave can hang out out here. This land is a nature preserve, with lots of hiking trails and trees and things. So you can still have some nice outdoor fun even if you're not going underground." Eliot hoped everyone would be up for going underground. If anyone didn't, he'd stay behind with them, but he was rather looking forward to going into the cave. "If you get in there and suddenly realize you're claustro- or nictophobic and you just didn't know it yet, let one of us know and we'll make sure you get back out."

“Take your cameras! You should be able to get some good photos. And follow the safety rules, this is not the place to take risks. There’s no buried treasure-- that we know of--” Hope sprang eternal. “But there are still snacks afterward.”

"So, without further ado," Eliot said, once everyone had a helmet and jumpsuit. "Whiting's Neck Cave."

Well, Cosette didn't think she had a fear of small enclosed spaces or anything like that. Her quizzical expression as she eyed the cave entrance could be attributed to her trying -- and essentially failing -- to recall any instances that might suggest otherwise.

And to her delight (and relief, to be honest), Cosette discovered that she didn't have a problem with her surroundings after all, which meant that she could go crawling through tunnels and scrambling up rocks to her heart's content.

She was having a grand time well before she even got to the grotto.

There wasn't running water, no, but Ringo found herself surprised by how, well, dirty and muddy it was. The boots and leggings instructions made a lot more sense now.

Also, she was totally going to need a shower after this was over.

She grinned down at herself as her feet squished slightly. Maybe two showers.

All the equipment seemed odd; Jalian had worn tight jeans and tall boots (and her knives); what did she need a jumpsuit for? Still, she shrugged and put it and the helmet on. She didn't switch the light on, though; she really didn't need it.

Eliot was on alert for any freak outs. Sometimes you didn't know you had issues with confined spaces until you were actually trying to fit yourself through a small underground hole at a weird angle lit only by a bunch of headlamps and flashlights.

This was totally cool, yes, but also somewhat unnerving. There wasn't a whole lot of room for bouncing and that had Kathy a little more on edge than she expected.

Huh. Something to think about.
