Relax and Recharge 2: Extreme Relaxation, Tuesday Period Two

Once more Bond's class was meeting in the Danger Shop. Once within, they stood by a set of turnstiles, overgrown with vines.

"Good morning," Bond greeted them cheerfully. "Today we'll be looking at the practice of urban exploration, which as you might guess from the name involves finding various abandoned structures within urban areas and exploring them. It's not as immediately exciting as some of your previous weeks' options, but it has its own set of thrills, both from the at best quasi-legal nature of the act, as well as various structural dangers and environmental health risks that can arise in locations such these."

"Now, we're going to exploring something a touch out of the ordinary, even for this hobby, an abandoned German amusement park." Because going to an abandoned amusement park was totally a fun teenager activity, and likely to lead to lingering psychological trauma for any of the class.

Inside the park were various abandoned rides, like swan boats, or a ferris wheel, a viking ship, and numerous fibreglass dinosaurs, all covered in a thick blanket of weeds.

...um did that fibreglass dinosaur turn its head to look at you?

Even though this place was slightly strange, Nathan found it relaxing. It was quiet and still. It had a history to it that made Nathan curious. He walked around the rides, stopping and staring every so often.

Ringo was enjoying the park, too, though not in quite the same way Nathan was. She was running around, jumping on things, and generally trying to explore places you probably weren't supposed to go. Well, weren't supposed to go even more than just into the abandoned park at all.

Which is how she ended up on the roof of one of the park buildings when her foot hit a rotten bit of wood and went sliding away. "Whoops!" she called out as she tumbled off the edge, managing to turn her fall into a controlled flip and landing just before a small rain of debris slid off after her.

When she looked up and spotted Nathan, her eyes widened in surprise. "Oh, sorry! I hope none of that hit you!"

The debris had fallen down well away from him but Nathan had glanced up anyway. He shook his head.

"No, you're fine," he called up. "I'm fine too. No harm done."

"Oh, good," Ringo exclaimed with a relieved grin.

"It's one thing to accidentally drop a bunch of debris on a friend, but with someone you don't really know I'm pretty sure it counts as rude."

"It's fine," he said again, shaking his head. "Even if you'd hit me, I'd be fine. It's not that big a deal. Thanks for the lookout anyway."

"I'm Ringo, by the way," she offered, brushing some dirt off of her pants and then walking closer. It was worth introducing herself in case it was rude to almost land on someone (well, for some values of 'almost') and not even tell them your name.

"Nathan," he said, waving up at her. "Nice meet you."

He wasn't great with social interaction. He probably never would be.

"Enjoying the park?"

"So far!" Ringo nodded. "It's pretty sweet, isn't it?" She looked around with a grin. "All this interesting stuff to explore. I just wish I had my ATs with me. This place is practically a playground."

She glanced over at Nathan. "What about you?" She asked because he didn't seem quite as, um, enthusiastic as Ringo was. Which, to be fair, would take some doing.

"I like it well enough," Nathan said, looking around. "It's quiet and calm. It's good to walk through and picture what might have been going on in the past with some of these things. It's interesting."

Ringo tilted her head to one side, considering that. "You know, I hadn't thought of it that way, but you're right." She looked around again. "Anything standing out to you?"

"Not really," he answered honestly. "Everything's interesting in its own way and I don't have a lot of imagination. It's just nice to look forward. I like the stillness."

"I guess I can understand that," Ringo chuckled.

Then stilled, blinking as a thought struck her. "And, um, I'm interrupting that stillness, aren't I?" Whoops!

"It's fine," Nathan said, waving a hand. "It's not like I was expecting it to be totally silent or anything. There's other people here and they can do their own thing while I'm here walking."

"Oh, cool." Ringo grinned. "I was worried that you might not want company."

"I'm just walking, really," Nathan admitted. "So, I'm not great company anyway. But, I'm pretty much never really good company."

"Awww, I'm sure that's not true!" Ringo insisted with absolutely no evidence to support that claim. "I bet you're super-interesting!"

"Not really." He knew there were interesting things about him, sure, but those were secret. He kept the parts of him that made him different contained to very few people. "I just like to walk and be outside. It's good to clear your head."

"Well, if you do a lot of walking, I bet you've seen some neat stuff!" See? That was at least potentially super-interesting!

"Nothing that other people couldn't see," he answered, shrugging. "Just trees and mountains and stuff like that. Really, nothing special."

He wasn't going to share about witches, about Gifts and Givings or anything. He didn't know her and wasn't very open with anything.

"If you wanna see what I see, just take walks."

Ringo laughed. "But I'd see different trees and mountains and stuff. Besides, I've spent most of my life in big cities. Not a lot of chances to get out in nature."

She shrugged. "I mean, have you ever seen, I don't know, like, a bear or something?" That'd be cool! "Or, um, maybe a weird plant?" Less cool, unless the plant was really weird.

"I tend to stay away from bears," he said, shaking his head. "I let them do their thing. I've seen deer. Rabbits. Squirrels. Typical wild animals. As for plants, I...don't know. They're all green to me."

"Well, I've never seen deer before!" She grinned. "Are they as cute and delicate-looking in real life as they are in pictures?"

"If you like that sort of thing?" Nathan shrugged again. He'd mostly just watched them run away. "They're deer. They're quick and quiet. I don't really think of them as cute."

Yeah, the first thing Kathy did was climb all the way up to the top of the Ferris wheel, and balance on one of the swinging lifts to shout, "I'm queen of the woooorld!"

Look, sometimes you just had to, okay? Though it probably would have been more fitting on the viking ship.

Being up that high meant that she had a great view of the park. Which included a great view of the dinosaurs lumbering to life.
