Outdoor Adventure Time!, part 2, Tuesday, period 1

Class met today on the sand below the boardwalk, where the geography of the island kept the waves to a minimum, allowing for greater underwater visibility. Eliot, wearing a pair of swimshorts and a tank top, was holding a swim mask and giving it a suspicious look. There were other masks, tanks, fins, vests, and other equipment carefully set in a line on the sand.

“How many of you are already SCUBA-certified?” Parker asked, looking hopeful. “It’s okay if you’re not. We both are, unlike last week. Eliot just has issues.”

"I don't have --" Eliot sighed. "Look, you try fightin' a spear fisherman underwater while avoiding getting shot by drug runners and see how you like it."

Parker kept talking like Eliot hadn’t said anything more combative than “It’s hot out today.”

“For those of you who want to take it easier, we do have snorkeling, which is just as fun. But if you go into the deeper water, you’ll probably see weirder and more beautiful things! Or possibly find shipwrecks! Or pearls!”

Yeah, Parker was in it for the treasure.

"Or a damned seamonster," Eliot muttered. "Swear to god, one of these days I'm gonna get tossed into this water and end up fighting that damned seamonster. . . ."

Kathy wasn't SCUBA-certified, but that wasn't going to stop her from trying it out anyway. She listened to the rules and as soon as it was feasible, dove in to explore what lurked under the water.

Ringo was torn. She knew that she wasn't really much of a swimmer. Sure, she could not-drown pretty well, but she wasn't sure that was enough to try the SCUBA thing.

But she really, really wanted to try the SCUBA thing.

Life was full of difficult decisions.

Was Cosette SCUBA-certified? Absolutely not. Was that going to stop her from taking a camera and some SCUBA gear and giving it a try anyway?

Of course it wasn't, and after twenty minutes or so of fiddling around with the equipment until she thought she could reasonably maneuver underwater, she took her camera and was snapping away.

The pictures probably weren't that good, and weren't of anything particularly noteworthy, but she was taking pictures of things underwater, and that was amazing enough in itself, all right?

Of course Vider wasn't SCUBA-certified, but like she was going to let that stop her. She really, really wanted to meet that sea monster.

Alana wasn't sure her wings would play nice with the scuba equipment or the pressure of being deep underwater, so she went with snorkeling and saw some amazing fish -- and, thankfully, no sea monster.

Certified? What an odd concept! Jalian listened to the instructions, then followed them. It was odd breathing through a mask, but the underwater scenery was interesting.

She wasn't taking pictures, but she was looking around a lot. And she had her longest knife strapped to her leg, just in case.
