Day After Doomsday, Thursday, Per 2

"Welcome to your final," Hardison said. "I never got an actual report from y'all, but just listenin' to you talk made it sound like y'all were plannin' to take the fight to those things out there. Unfortunately, you're all hungry an' pretty slow, so to represent that, I'm speedin' the monsters up a bit. They're stronger'n you an' now faster'n you by a decent clip, but you're still smarter'n them, so hopefully that'll be enough to turn the tide."

What the class didn't know was that Hardison had set up a timer for the sim; if they didn't head out and start their own attack by halfway through the class period, the monsters were going to attack the dorms. Surprise! But, hey, sometimes people needed a little kick or else they'd spend all their time planning and never get around to doing.

Who appreciates everyone who participated in class!

Raven had tucked her bag away at the start of class as usual, and towards the end of class, she went to find it again and came over to find Hardison.

With an apple.

"Thanks," she said, smiling. "This class was a lot of fun, even if you never did kill me off as an object lesson."

Hardison accepted the apple and beamed, not even bothering to play it cool. There was no way he could rein back his grin, it was impossible.

"You were way more useful to me alive than dead," he told her. "But maybe next session? I can kill you off once each class period to show the other students the downsides of each different class."

Raven grinned back. "Multiple death scenes, huh? Sounds like fun." And reasonably canon-appropriate! "So you are teaching next session. I was going to ask."

"Yup. A class on...adventurin'." Which was sure to throw Eliot for a loop, at least until he got further details about it. "Just decided an' only barely got my idea sent off in time. The last class is gonna be a dungeon crawl."

It was D&D. Hardison was absolutely going to be teaching D&D.

Raven bit her lip shyly. "Don't suppose you'll want a TA for that one, too?"

Because that hadn't been implied by the offer to kill her off in each class as an object lesson or anything.

"I'm gonna need one, in fact," Hardison said, still unable to stop smiling. "So I'm hopin' you're willin' to sign up for my class, cause I like the way you think an' I could use someone that creative in my next class."

"Yes!" Being coy and cool was for other people. "I'd love to. In most classes I just have to get my fun by teasing boys."

Or, you know, just Ichabod. She was going to miss him.

"There'll be plenty of chances for you to do that, too," he assured her. "There's probably like a hundred rogue backstabbin' an' wizard staff pickup lines you could look up. As your teacher, I'm pretty sure I ain't s'posed to tell you them, but I got faith you can figure some out on your own."

"Wizard staffs? These are going to be magical adventures?"

"There will be dungeons," Hardison said. "There may even be dragons. You'll just have to sign up and see."

GUESS WHO THOUGHT HE WAS CLEVER.

"Dungeons and dragons, huh?" Raven was from a good 20 years before that had been invented, but it still sounded vaguely familiar. "Sounds exciting."

"Girl an' you ain't even seen the fireball traps," Hardison said with a laugh. "Well, we'll see how many students sign up. Hopefully we'll get a decent turnout."

This class wouldn't even be dependent on them communicating!

That was probably for the best, since this one had shown that they didn't do that very well.

"I'll be sure to brag about you to my friends," Raven said.

"I appreciate that," Hardison said. "...You ain't necessarily gotta mention the D&D aspect though. Leave it at adventurin' an' we'll see what happens. Unless you think that'll pull folks in."

"D&D," Raven said. ". . . You mean the dungeons and the dragons."

That was a thing, wasn't it, one of those future things she'd kind of skipped over.

An awesome thing.

"Exactly," Hardison said. "It's a whole..." He waved his hand. "Thing. Ask one of your friends about it sometime. Or come by when I ain't bein' a teacher an' I'll show you some of what it is."

AWESOME, RAVEN. IT IS AWESOME.

"I may have to take you up on that," Raven said. "So long as you don't mind hanging around with a teenager on your off hours."

"I'll just tell Eliot that I'm followin' in his footsteps," Hardison said, snickering. Because he was a terrible boyfriend, regardless of whether labels were being used or not. "An' besides--with the way this island works, if I only talked to adults in my off-hours, I'd end up spendin' a lot of time bein' quiet. An' I ain't real great at that."

"There are kind of a lot of us," Raven said. "And anyway, you're hardly even that old."

Sorry, Hardison, that was what hanging around teenagers got you: comments about your age.

"Eliot . . . he's the grumpy guy with the hair, right?"

"S'true, I ain't," Hardison said. "IAin't even thirty yet. Closer to some of y'all in age than I am to some of the teachers."

Sorry, Hannibal, but Hardison wasn't going to be rocking the distinguished gray any time soon.

"An', yeah, that's Eliot," he said, smile turning warm and a little bashful. "Though you forgot that he's also an' amazin' cook, along with the grumpy an' the hair."

"Can't forget what I didn't know," Raven said. "I've only really just seen him around. You two are . . . close?"

It wasn't hard to work out, from that expression on Hardison's face.

"Yes," Hardison said, watching Raven closely. He often forgot that she was from a very different time when he was talking to her, but not now. Though, honestly, the relationship he found himself in raised eyebrows even for people who had grown up in modern day America. "The three of us. Me, Parker, 'n Eliot. We're a thing. Together. Partners, family, more than."

He let that sit there, allowing Raven to figure out how she wanted to handle that information, idly wondering if he'd need to find a new TA.
