Fun with Magic | Friday, First period

Class was inside again today, and the Danger Shop was...a big, white room. Bob was beaming at them.

Literally. He raised his hands, and the air around them sparkled, waves of colour expanding out. "This week - art!" he explained. He made a tossing motion at the wall, and a rainbow appeared and stuck there. "Touch whichever colour you like, then draw with it. Paint with it. Whatever you like. Scrub your hand through it to erase." He demonstrated.

"Enjoy!"

Lottie looked around thoughtfully for several long moments. Then began drawing the SUPERHERO FANDOM DESERVED.

Her art style wasn't so much realistic as vaguely functional cartooning, but at least it wasn't stick figures. Fandom's superhero had utterly gorgeous, almost preternatural features (you could tell because they were labeled this way) and a costume that showed off his washboard abs. He commanded a squirrel army by bribing them with his magical rum summoning powers, and he had radio antennae sticking out of his cowl.

He was . . . FANMAN. The Impenetrable.

He was also sparkly, and with the help of Bob flexed his muscles and grinned, posing in place like a body-builder.

Flowers. Elsa had decided that she was going to paint flowers. Big sweeping strokes of blue that branched out from the center into sprawling patterns, interplaying with one another in a bouquet of shapes that were all unique from one another. Here, a blue rose. There, a passion flower. And then several more from there, before Elsa stepped back and looked at her handiwork, at the way one petal almost seemed to branch off into another complete flower, and she sighed.

Snowflakes. Elsa had apparently decided that she was going to paint snowflakes.

"Hi, hi!" Alluka announced her presence as she popped up by Elsa's side. "It's really pretty."

Well, it was. Even if it wasn't what Elsa had wanted to draw or something.

"Oh! Thank you, Alluka." Elsa turned a little smile toward the other girl. "Do they look at all like flowers to you?"

No, Elsa. You were going to have to get over it.

Alluka's gaze slid from Elsa to the pretty picture and she looked it over again.

"There's a flower here," she said hopefully, pointing. No, there wasn't. "But maybe it's all flowers I don't know, so I could be wrong."

She was not really the best to ask!

Elsa gave the place that Alluka had pointed at a thoughtful look. It still looked more like a snowflake to her.

"I think most of it looks like frost," she admitted, giving Alluka a little smile. "That might be a sign that I need to work on my artistic skills some more."

Or that she was just really, really good at making ice for some reason. Imagine that.

She giggled.

"At least it's fun?" Alluka suggested happily. "And it really does look pretty, even if it's not what you wanted."

"It's fun," Elsa agreed with a little laugh of her own. "And I'm not really planning on being an artist when I grow up, so I might as well enjoy myself while I'm here. What are you painting today, Alluka?"

"I'm just playing with the colours," she said, grinning at Elsa. "I didn't know what to draw, so I decided to see how they all looked with each other. Some are better than others."

Some made an ugly brown colour when combined. It was icky.

It was true. Color theory was a cruel, cruel master that way.

"Some are," Elsa agreed. "I like mixing purples with blues, and blues with greens. They make prettier purples and greens, if you do it right."

Elsa had a slight blue bias, perhaps.

"Have you got a favorite color?"

"I like pink the best," Alluka admitted. "But, but I like most colours, so long as they're pretty."

She wasn't a huge fan of brown, grey, or black, for instance. They were booooring.

"Pink is a wonderful color too," Elsa decided. "I like wearing clothes with pink flowers on them sometimes, actually."

They brought out the usual blue.

"We could give some pink flowers a try, if you'd like? I think I can make them actually look like flowers if I don't get too carried away."

"Oh! Yes, please!"

Look at how easy Alluka was to please, Elsa. Look at that.

She beamed. "And, and can the centers be yellow? So that they're happy pink flowers."

"Yellow is a very happy color," Elsa agreed. "I think it's the perfect one for the middle of a happy flower."

What other colors generally went there, anyway?

Silly, Elsa. Any colour could go there! Yellow was just the best at it.

"We should do it over where we won't have to erase your picture, right?" Alluka asked.

Ada started with a deep blue, but not for the reasons Chester or Duncan or any of the others would have assumed (worried). Dark red, dark yellow, brighter, black and green-black and a luminescent color so bright it hurt.

It wasn't a memory that Ada could pin down any more than anyone else could remember the first time they recognized their house as where they lived. But rising out of the night came the Miller Family Carnival. Or at least, a very small part of it, as seen by a girl taking a nap under another ride during a break. Maybe from a summer when she was five, or fifteen, but Ada didn't need to think to know what color went where.

Bob looked at it, and the lights started blinking, the carousel turning. "Home?" he asked.

Ada tilted her head to consider her masterpiece, as if she hadn't really thought about it. "Yes," she said finally. "Part of it, anyway."

"Only part of this is home, or this is only part of home?" Bob asked.

"Depends," Ada said with a shrug. "We don't got enough space, some things don't go up. But there's more than this, but everyone draws Ferris wheels for carnivals."

Ada, for the record, was not everyone.

Alluka wasn't really sure what to draw, so she wasn't drawing anything in specific at all.

But she was having a lot of fun checking out what the colours looked like and then seeing how they combined into each other, then erasing them all and starting over.

She grinned back at him.

"I don't know what to draw," Alluka shared. "So, so I wanted to play anyway. There's so many fun colours that it'd be boring to not and to just watch others play!"

Also that would be Deeply Unfair.
