The plan had been for class to meet in the Danger Shop, but the day was far too beautiful to spend it cooped up indoors - Bob had had plenty of that, thank you very much. So, class had been ~~handwavily~~ informed to meet on the lawn instead.

"So." Bob eyed them all critically. "Last semester I taught a class on defence against magic. Where mostly what I learned was that half of you are far too nervous around magic to do any good with it, half of you take it for granted it can do just about anything, and just about all of you - look, are you teenagers or what? Don't you ever just...cut loose?" He sighed.

"So this time, we're using magic for fun. You'll be learning what it can and can't do, and hopefully getting a bit of a more accurate picture and a bit more at ease."

He looked around them once more and nodded. "Right. I'm Hrothbert of Bainbridge. You can call me Bob or Sir, whichever you prefer. Anders is my TA for the class, so any questions you don't want to ask me, ask him. Now I know you're probably all tired of introductions by now, but I don't care. Introduce yourselves, and let me know what magic you can do, what other talents you might have, what you're familiar with, and so forth."

He picked a random student and stared at them expectantly.

"I'm Kaylin Neya and fun? How can magic be fun?"

Answer the rest of the questions? How could she when that was all she could think about.

"Electricity can be fun if you've got good control," Anders overshared.

"Yes, and that would be Ms Adler's class later, thank you. Not really a group activity," Bob said.

"You're reading into things."

Not that Bob was wrong. Anders would be a (relatively) good boy for the rest of class.

"Am I?" Bob smirked. "In that case, I invite your other explanations."

"And what does that have to do with magic?" Kaylin asked. Electricity didn't exist where she was from, so there was no overlap here for her.

They didn't have electrical power where Anders was from either, but they had lightning and the magical version thereof.

Anders let his smirk fade. "Nothing. Nothing Bob wants me to talk about in class, anyhow."

They had lightning where Kaylin was from too - and possibly even a magical version of it, though she hadn't seen it - but she was fairly singleminded, practically to the point of blinders, about magic.

She sighed and shook her head. "You sound like a mage. Or an Arcanist."

"A year in, and she notices that," Anders said, ruling his eyes a little. "Well-spotted."

Kaylin made a face. "I insulted you by saying I didn't like mages the day we arrived a year ago. I didn't forget. Just sometimes you sound more ridiculously like them than usual. Sometimes you just seem like a regular person."

"And sometimes you almost seem like you aren't completely devoid of social graces," Anders told her, cheerfully. "I suppose we both slip up once in a while."

"I'm not sure what devoid means," Kaylin admitted, "But I know I don't have many of those grace things. Tact isn't exactly something I'm known for."

"Lacking," Anders informed her. "Missing. Without. But at least you're aware of it, so that's something."

He was not making much of a case for his own sense of tact himself just then, really.

She shrugged. Kaylin didn't particularly care if she was tactful or not. It had never gotten her anything she wanted.

"Yeah, well, there are more important things in life."

"I never said there weren't," Anders shrugged.

"Lots of ways!" Bob pointed at her. "What sorts of things do you do for fun?"

"I train with the Hawks. walk patrol. Things like that," Kaylin said. "And back home I do a lot of betting."

"What sorts of things do you bet on?" Bob asked. "Games of skill? Chance? Races?"

"Stuff like when someone will have their baby or what the next fight will be about in the mess hall, or who'll be the next on the Sergeant's crap list... That kind of thing." She could - and would - bet on pretty much anything. She wasn't very lucky at it either.

Bob smirked. "Ever bet on that next fight, then start it yourself?"

She looked at him in horror. "Of course not! That would be cheating."

And sighed. "Plus it wouldn't count if I started it. You can't bet on yourself."

Bob's smirk turned into a wide grin. "But what if you started it yourself with magic, from across the room or when you weren't even there?"

"It would still be cheating," Kaylin said firmly. "And where's the fun in that?"

Besides, she couldn't beging to imagine even for a second how in the world she could make something like that happen with magic. Healing sure, even if she didn't know how she did it, she could do it.

She had no idea how she did the other stuff. The bad stuff.

Bob shrugged. "Not losing money? Having everybody wonder how you figured it out? What if," he suggested, "it weren't considered cheating? What if it were allowed, as long as nobody could figure out how?"

"If it wasn't cheating...? Maybe," she admitted.
