Fun with Magic | Friday, First period

The plan had been for class to meet in the Danger Shop, but the day was far too beautiful to spend it cooped up indoors - Bob had had plenty of that, thank you very much. So, class had been handwavily informed to meet on the lawn instead.

"So." Bob eyed them all critically. "Last semester I taught a class on defence against magic. Where mostly what I learned was that half of you are far too nervous around magic to do any good with it, half of you take it for granted it can do just about anything, and just about all of you - look, are you teenagers or what? Don't you ever just...cut loose?" He sighed.

"So this time, we're using magic for fun. You'll be learning what it can and can't do, and hopefully getting a bit of a more accurate picture and a bit more at ease."

He looked around them once more and nodded. "Right. I'm Hrothbert of Bainbridge. You can call me Bob or Sir, whichever you prefer. Anders is my TA for the class, so any questions you don't want to ask me, ask him. Now I know you're probably all tired of introductions by now, but I don't care. Introduce yourselves, and let me know what magic you can do, what other talents you might have, what you're familiar with, and so forth."

He picked a random student and stared at them expectantly.

"Hi! I'm Dipper Pines!" he said with a wave. "And I don't know how to do spells per se as opposed to reading something in a book and hoping I get it right."

"Please try to do as little of that as possible," Bob said. He may have looked pained. "Mispronounce the wrong word, and you could...well, just don't, all right?"

"You mean like summon a zombie apocalypse?" Dipper asked and then gave Bob a firm nod. "Been there. Done that. Not happening again."

"I'm Lottie Grote," Lottie said. She'd worn her cloak to class today, and was feeling well magical. "I don't know any magic or anything, but I did once use a ghost to defeat an evil hope-eating spirit that was makin all my friends collapse into little balls of emo. Which was a plan right out of Barry Plodder, so I think that counts."

For all Bob knew, the cloak was the height of fashion in Lottie's world; he wasn't going to judge.

"How did that work?" he asked. "The spirit and the ghost both."

"Well, see, the spirit had possessed a newspaper man and was goin around eating hope, and leavin his victims all with this CREEPY SMILE, but his favorites were the last hopes, so he was goin after the downtrodden and dispossessed, mostly. Which included a lot of DESPERATE CRIMINALS, so the papers all called him the Night Vigilante or somethin but we called him the Night Stalker, cause of the creepiness." If Bob managed to make sense of that, even Lottie would be impressed. "And the ghost was the ghost of the world's most depressed rock star who was MURDERED BY HIS BANDMATE and thusly even more depressed post-mortemed. So when the spirit got all huge and turned into a giant walnut and started suckin out the hopes of the whole town I released the ghost from the bricks of his old house so he could float up and then the spirit sucked him down cause HIS last hope would have to be delicious or somethin and then the walnut imploded. And the ghost felt happy for the first time ever and moved on to his ETERNAL REWARD."

And that was how Lottie had spent her last summer vacation.

Oh oh oh! She did love getting to introduce herself! It was just so exciting. Alluka squished her bunny tightly and said, "I'm Alluka Zoldyck! And most of my family can do things like magic! I can't though."

But Nanika could.

"Oh?" Bob smiled at her. "What sorts of magic can your family do?"

"All kinds, I think," she said helpfully. It... wasn't actually that helpful, but Alluka was mostly working on the tiny amounts of information she'd picked up while trapped in her room. So. "My parents are impossible to beat."

"I'm Kaylin Neya and fun? How can magic be fun?"

Answer the rest of the questions? How could she when that was all she could think about.

"Electricity can be fun if you've got good control," Anders overshared.

"Yes, and that would be Ms Adler's class later, thank you. Not really a group activity," Bob said.

"Lots of ways!" Bob pointed at her. "What sorts of things do you do for fun?"

Wait, what? Ada knew she had big blank spots in her memory, but she was pretty sure magic wasn't real. Mostly.

"Ada Miller," she said, once it came round to her and it was clear she was expected to say something. "I'm a mean hand at three-card monte, or anything you'd expect to find on a carnival midway."

"Oo, very useful." Bob grinned at her. "I expect you'll enjoy this class. No magic?" he asked, just to clarify.

"I'm Anders," Anders said, with an amused little smile at having been named TA. "I can do elemental magic and healing spells."

"Celia Bowen," she said with a little wave and a smile. "And I'm an illusionist -- at least, that's what we call it in my family. I can change the colors and textures of physical objects, their size, temperature -- you name it. And I can create and destroy matter through will, I'm telekinetic, I can heal myself but not others, and...." She thought for a moment, and said, "And that's about it. My father uses his talents on the stage to entertain, and I will too, after I graduate."

Bob's smile at Celia was perhaps a little softer than some of his others. Call it a soft spot for stage illusionists' children. "That sounds very useful, Celia. Pleased to meet you. Is magic common in your world, or does your father convince people he's just doing tricks?"

"I'm Blue Sargent," Blue said, "and my family are psychics. The real kind. So, tarot, scrying, that kind of thing." Also, occasional weird herbal things that took up half the fridge, but she honestly wasn't clear if those worked or not. "I'm not, though. But I do make magic stronger by being around people who can do it." So half the class might be noticing a power boost.

Bob nodded. "Potentially very useful. Is your ability something you can control, or is it constant wherever you are?"

"I can feel it," Anders told her. "Like ... my blood is warmer all of a sudden, but in a good way. Have you ever helped a healer?"

"I can feel it, too," Celia offered, smiling over. "That's awfully handy, though it must be a bit of a mixed bag for you."

Always the magic-booster, never the magician, something something.

"I'm Elsa, of Arendelle," she introduced, once her turn came around. It even came with a little curtsy! "And while I know of a few different kinds of magic, the only magic I can do myself involves ice. I'm still working on control, though."

Which was sort of like her way of saying that she was probably going to actively try to not do ice magic while she was in this class if she could help it.

Not using magic would rather defeat the purpose of the class, Elsa. "Welcome back," Bob told her, smiling. "I hope we'll get to explore some interesting aspects of your power this semester."
