Library, Thursday (May 7)

Thanks to Monday's class, Cosette really was going to spend every spare minute of her shift today researching the history of windsurfing.

Or at least it started out that way, and then she started getting sidetracked by books on sailing in general. And Olympic aquatic sports. And -- it made sense how she'd gotten from one topic to the other, though she couldn't trace the steps back to exactly how -- the history of Easter Island.

She could end up forgetting to leave at the end of the day, at this rate, or at least she'd have amassed enough books on these various topics to build herself a small fort, and sleep in it.

"You may, if you wish," Edward said, weaving his fingers together behind his back, the remaining apple balanced on top. "But it isn't necessary. I had a problem, and you helped me solve it."

"Seems it isn't the first time I've helped you with this particular problem," Cosette noted, suppressing a laugh but not her amusement at the apple-balancing. "I might say you ought to look into a more permanent solution, but seeing as the problem works out to my benefit perhaps I shouldn't."

"Best to keep mum when it's to your benefit," Edward agreed. "Very wise, Cosette. Very wise."

"Do you really think it's wise to give me advice like that?" Cosette asked with a chuckle. "How do you know I won't take it to heart, and use that to take advantage of you?"

SHE DIDN'T MEAN IT LIKE THAT. Mostly because it didn't occur to her.

"You like me?" Edward offered, grinning.

He was hoping she did, at least.

"Well, I do try to be an honorable person, but yes, that's true as well," Cosette told him, flushing just a little bit.

"Ah, I wasn't trying to impinge on your honor," Edward said, letting the apple roll into one hand and taking a bite. "Apologies, miss. I'm quite fond of you and your honor."

"You needn't worry, I didn't take it to mean that," Cosette assured him. "I'm quite glad you came by today, else I might have gotten caught up in --" she gestured to the several stacks of books nearby -- "all of this, and forgotten about everything else."

Edward let out a chuckle. "I ain't sure if I'll be much help," he said, "I can't get that class out of my head either."

"I wonder what they'll have for us to do next week?" Cosette said enthusiastically and la la la I totally meant the class was on Tuesday the entire time I swear. "Do you think there will be another chance to try windsurfing again? Outside of class, perhaps?"

"I know Parker is always willing to lend equipment if you ask her," Edward said. He shrugged lightly and smiled. "I could."

"As if I couldn't ask myself, had I the mind to!" Nobody would believe you were actually scandalized, Cosette. "But I certainly wouldn't stop you, either."

Edward held up his hands. "No one's doubting your asking prowess," he teased. "A liberated woman, you are."

"You don't make that sound like a bad thing. I'm glad," Cosette decided. "Should we do that, then, do you think?"

"If Parker's willing to let us, I daresay it is a great idea," Edward said, grinning.

Cosette's smile at that was so enthusiastic that the library almost seemed a shade or two brighter. "I'm sure between the two of us we've a good chance of convincing her."
