International Cuisine | Monday, first period

"Good morning, ladies," Hannibal greeted his class. "Since we are at the very first class this term, if you're new, you should know that it's the day for introductions. And you won't have had time to get sick of them yet." He grinned.

"For those of you who haven't met me, I am Doctor Hannibal Lecter. Introductions in my class are as much a matter of necessity as tradition - we will be experiencing new things, and it is vitally important I know if there are things that I should be keeping from you. So. I would like for you to each give us your name and where you're from, but also any things you may be allergic to, and any foods you can't or won't eat. Also, I would like to hear if there are any particular foods or cuisines you would be interested in trying."

He spread his hands. "We have no formal syllabus this term, and there will be no grading. There is only one rule - you must be respectful. If you find a food distasteful, you needn't eat it. But you will refrain from calling it disgusting, or showing disrespect to those serving it to you. So long as you adhere to that rule, you will pass. If there are any requirements for individual trips, I will let you know prior to that day by e-mail. We won't be going anywhere this week, so please enjoy what I've made." He gestured at the food.

"Also - I have no assistant as of yet. If you would be interested, please let me know." He waved at the first girl to begin.

"Hi, I'm Alana," Alana said, with a little wave. She was happy to start her week with a nice, easy class. "I'm from a planet called Landfall, which nobody has heard of. I'll eat about anything, but I guess I'd like to try more kinds of sushi. I've only really had California rolls."

"Welcome back, Alana. We can definitely try more sushi," Hannibal promised her, smiling. "What is Landfall's cuisine like, compared to what we have here?"

"Weirdly similar," Alana admitted. "Closest to Szechuan Chinese, I guess, but with different plants and proteins. And, y'know, we have sandwiches and candy bars and all of that. We don't live on protein shakes."

"I should hope not," Hannibal said firmly. "That sounds like it would be terrible."

"No -- um, absolutely," Alana said, because no shit wasn't the kind of thing she said in class.

At least not on the first day.

"But it seems to happen in a ton of movies. Or if it's not shakes it's pills. Or algae slime. Because that's appetizing."

Hannibal chuckled. "While I do know some very good recipes that incorporate seaweed, I promise no shakes or pills." He shook his head. "I've never understood why anybody would want to foresee a culture devoid of actual food."

"I'm Charlotte Grote," Lottie said. "But most folks call me 'Lottie'. I'm from Tackleford, in the UK, and I would like to eat all of the sausages."

All of them. From anywhere.

She loved her some sausages.

Hannibal could appreciate that. "Welcome, Lottie. I rather like making sausages myself," he confessed. "I'm sure we can find a few different cuisines that use them."

"I'm Rapunzel!" she said, waving exuberantly. "I'm from Corona, and -- well, there's nothing I've refused to try, so far. And I don't think I'm allergic to anything. But I'd like to try more coffee? I really like it and I haven't really tried many kinds."

Because she should really limit her caffeine intake.

"Welcome back, Rapunzel." Hannibal smiled at her. "Do you mean more different varieties of coffee, or more different ways of brewing and serving it? Or both?"

"There's different ways to brew it??????"

So...both. Both was good.

"Oh, yes." Hannibal nodded. "There are different sorts of grinds and brews for things like Turkish coffee or espresso. And different sorts of beans taste different, too."

Lottie couldn't help but stare ~~a little~~ ~~a lot~~ constantly at Rapunzel's hair. "That is the longest hair I have EVER SEEN," she said.

She wasn't super good at keeping her internal monologue internal.

"If you had seen someone with more hair than me," Rapunzel giggled, twining a lock of said hair between her fingers, "I think I'd kind of have to meet them. I mean, not to brag or anything. I just have, like, a lot of hair for most people."

"You must have the fittest arms," Lottie mused. Her theory of hair care was "brush until your arms hurt", but she was reasonably certain you'd have to go well past that just to make sure you got all of Rapunzel's.

"They're just regular," Rapunzel assured her, flexing her right arm like she'd seen people on TV and stuff do. (The puffed sleeve added a lot, really.) "I think my neck might be really strong, though! I've never been in a neck-strength-measuring contest but I bet I'd win if that was a thing."

"Like on the telly, when the big beefer drags a bus with his teeth!" Lottie frowned. "Though maybe that's more teeth strength."

"I'm Kira, and I'm from New York," she said. "I don't think there's anything I won't eat, and there's nothing I can't eat, thankfully. As for what I'd like to try... maybe things that look weird, but taste good?"

"Hello, Kira." Hannibal nodded. "What sorts of things would you say fall into that category? Is it things you wouldn't think to try otherwise?"

"Hiii!" Mabel was entirely too excited to be here. Or, well, she was being herself, proudly clad in her best hamburger and french fries sweater (http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/gravityfalls/images/3/3d/S1e13_oh_wait_here_they_are%21.png/revision/latest?cb=20130411113159). But there were so many new people here, so she was thrilled that there was a chance to properly introduce herself in the classroom, like this! "I'm Mabel Pines, from Piedmont, California! I'll try anything once, but I'd rather not go home smelling like pork if I can help it after class - it upsets my pet pig, Waddles."

Who was adorable and she wouldn't hear a word to the contrary.

"And I'm most interested in trying desserts from all around the world!"

Because Mabel totally needed more sugar in her diet. Unless it was Smile Dip. That stuff was evil and had been discontinued for a reason.

"Welcome, Mabel." Hannibal nodded to her. "I can promise quite a few desserts, and while I can't promise no pork, I'll try to present other options as well."

But no Smile Dip.

"I am Kaylin Neya, from Elantra," she said. "And I'll eat pretty much anything. I don't really have anything I'd like to try - mostly because I don't know what there is to try."

"Hopefully by the end of the class, you'll have a better idea," Hannibal said. "Welcome back, Kaylin. What sorts of foods does Elantra have?"

She shrugged. "I mostly eat bread and some cheese. Sometimes stews and stuff like that. Sometimes I get done early enough that one of the bakers still has meatrolls."

And sometimes she hadn't spent her last coin betting and could actually buy them.
