Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

He nodded. "Yeah, seems I've landed in quite the place. I was never much into science fiction as a kid but I figure this is what living in one of those novels must feel like."

"There are even aliens wandering around the island," Kathy said. "And people with superpowers."

Like her, but it seemed weird to just randomly bring that up.

"So, you're not wrong? But you'll settle into it pretty quickly. The first month or so throws you for a loop almost every time you step out of your dorm room and then after that, it saves throwing you for special occasions."

"There seem to be a lot of warnings attached to this place," he noted, tucking one hand into his pocket. "Like a pack of cigarettes or something. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing."

Well, one point in the 'good' column would be that Melissa would hate to know this place wasn't some dull institute of education.

"I don't want my lungs rotting just from being here."

"Your lungs will probably be okay," Kathy said. "And, so long as you're willing to keep an open mind and roll with the punches, so will the rest of you."

And assuming he kept to the designated island safe spots when the next thing invaded, too.

"It's just that this island has a base level of weird that takes some getting used to. Once you've adjusted to living in a scifi novel, everything kind of clicks into place. For the most part."

Jasper really didn't think he'd have to adjust to strange and new situations. Billy Dent had taken him to future crime scenes and made him clean things up after he'd done his thing. It tended to warp a mind.

"I think I'll be fine but thanks for the heads up," Jasper said, nodding kindly. "People always this nice around here?"

It was an attempt at changing the subject, getting off the topic of adjustments and adaptation until he really had time to sit and think.

"Mostly," Kathy said, thinking of the few exceptions they had to the general 'everyone's nice and helpful' rule. "We've all been newbies at one time and it's just mean to be rude to someone going through that same thing. Everyone's big on being helpful and sharing food. Those are the two main criteria for being a decent person around here, I think."

"Very Mayberry," Jasper remarked, glancing around. "But, I wouldn't be a young, growing boy if I was critical of free food. My parents raised me better than that."

No, they hadn't.

"I think all the restaurants on the island realized that they were stuck on an island of perpetually-hungry teens and just decided that it was easier if they just fed us all like we were preparing for a famine," Kathy said with a laugh. "So if you walk by a common room and see someone setting out enough Chinese food or pizza to feed the whole floor, they probably just ordered take out and would appreciate some help getting rid of it all."

Unless she'd done the ordering and then a slightly larger percent of the whole would have been ordered deliberately. But there's still be plenty to share.

"And you see the spread they have for the picnic. They do this several times a year. Free food and glitter, the two things that make the world go around."

"Not where I'm from," he said, rubbing his chin. This place was like some science fiction carnival or something. He didn't know what to make of it. He didn't know how Melissa had found this place. "That's not a complaint, though. Just an observation. I'll take free food."

"I'm from LA, so it's not really how things work where I'm from, either," Kathy said, laughing a little. "Of course, in LA we normally don't go to school in a castle. I spend a lot of Parents' Weekend trying to keep my family from realizing just how not normal this place is."
