Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"You are superstitious," Anders said, also looking to the sky.

"I don't think that's a bad thing here," Nathan said, shrugging. "Besides, I'd call it wary. I know what kinds of things this place can do. I'm just cautious."

"Cautious, superstitious ..." Anders shrugged, as if he thought the two were much the same in this case, and then let it drop. "How are you, anyhow? Good picnic so far?"

Nathan shrugged again, glancing around. "Well, there's no one I know running around but I didn't really expect there to be. It's okay. It's a nice day."

"No one I know either," Anders reported. "There's a dwarf, but he might just be a short human."

He poked at his plate as he considered what else to say. "Oh, I have a new little sister. Alluka."

"Alluka?" he repeated, pretty sure he'd bungled the name even if he'd just heard Anders repeat. "You're collecting those, aren't you?"

"Well, the last one escaped" -- Anders still felt a bit guilty about not having been closer to Travis -- "so I had to get a new one to fill the gap. It maintains the balance of the universe, or something like that."

"Maybe he just went home?" he asked, glancing over. "The last one. I'd probably take that opportunity too if I could. To go home and be safe."

"Would you?" Anders asked, a funny smile around his eyes. "I don't know if I would. Someday, I suppose, but so much would have to change I'm not sure I can even think about it yet."

"I would," Nathan said, nodding. "My family's there. It's what I know. It's where my people are. I'd go back if it's safe. It's not right now so I won't go back yet but I would go back if I could."

"Oh." Anders glanced away, seeming oddly interested in a passing squirrel. "Well, you have a year until graduation. Maybe things will look better by then."

It was funny. They'd spent the last nine months telling each other they had time, and it was still true, but the time they had wasn't infinite.

"Maybe." Nathan glanced over at him and sighed. "I have no way of knowing. Maybe I'll go back for a visit at some point and see what's...what's happening. See if anything is different."

It would be different soon. And it wouldn't be in a good way.

"Couldn't hurt to check," Anders said, trying to smile. "And I'm always up for tagging along to try to make sure nobody gets killed. Or at least not you."

"Thanks," Nathan said, letting go of a small breath. "I'll let you know if and when I decide to do that. Won't be anytime soon but maybe in a few months. Just for a quick visit."

"Right. Just check in with your people, maybe stop off in Wales, and then portal back," Anders nodded. "It might even be pleasant."

He was trying to be optimistic.

"I don't have many people there," Nathan admitted with a humorless laugh. "It'd be more of me trying to figure out what's going on with the Council and some other things before coming back. Maybe stop in Wales too."

Anders raised an eyebrow. "Have you thought about how you're going to check on the Council without letting them know you're around?"

"Not very seriously, no," Nathan admitted, shaking his head. "But, I will before I go back or anything. Right now, it's just an idea. Words and all."

"I like words," Anders said lightly. "I was just curious. You aren't the type to go off without a plan if you can help it, anyhow."

No, that would be Anders.

"I'll figure it out," he said, nodding. "Later. Much later. Now's not the time to start thinking seriously about that. Not yet."

"It's too nice a day for serous thought, anyhow," Anders told him. He could tell Nathan didn't want to talk about it more,and that was fine. "And too glittery."

He glanced toward the buffet table. "I haven't had any chocolate yet. Want me to get you anything?"

Nathan shook his head. "Not right now. I had some breakfast earlier and I'm full. But, maybe I'll steal some of yours when you come back."

He smiled.

Anders had an enormous weakness for Nathan's smile. (And his eyes. And his hands. And -- a lot of things, really, but the smile was the important one at the moment.) He smiled back.

"I'll get extra, then," he said, already headed toward the buffet. "Just in case you end up following up in that 'maybe.'"
