Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The last picnic for new arrivals had involved a bonfire, but there was no need for artificial warmth today. The weather outside was sunny, and just breezy enough that no one would roast, hopefully. There were tables and chairs arranged around the lawn, along with a long table of food, drinks, and desserts for anyone who stopped by.

There were stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"No. That's not about to happen anytime soon," Wash replied dryly, turning his head to keep an eye on the guy. "And you are?"

"...Totally interesting in the some of the tech you got goin' on there." And then Hardison realized that wasn't what the guy meant, oops. "Sorry man. Name's Hardison, 'sup?" He took a step forward to offer his hand. "General tech geek, so, y'know, interesting in all this hardware you're sportin'."

Wash looked at the hand and then made a quick, visual once over for any hidden weapons before shaking it. "Agent Washington. A little ahead of your time, I'd wager."

Pffft. Like Hardison was allowed to have weapons.

"Agent, huh? That understands why you're actin' allergic to my questions," Hardison said, his open demeanor shuttering a little bit. "Agent of what or is that all kinds of above my paygrade?"

"I'm a Freelancer. It's a program in the UNSC."

Kind of. Sort of.

"I feel so much closer to peace and security with you here," Hardison said flatly. "Thanks ever so much."

"I'll keep that in mind when hostile alien races appear to slaughter humanity."

Wash was also sarcastic. It was a thing that he did.

It was pretty much a requirement to survive the island.

"Man, we just fought off an' elder god," Hardison said. "There was a tentacle monster in my damn freezer two weeks ago. But sure glad to know we'll finally be protected."

"You fought off an elder god." Excuse his lack of belief in one key factor of that story.

"Well, the population of the island did," Hardison said. And for a definition of fought off that mostly meant they stopped amusing it so it flounced off. But they'd gotten a bunch of souls back or something, so Hardison was considering it a win. "Why, you met one?"

"Something like that." He was such a fan of sharing! "Is there a reason you feel the need to prove yourself here?"

"You're the one who brought up aliens comin' to slaughter humanity or whatever," Hardison pointed out. "I'm just sayin', not a whole lotta people 'round here waitin' for you to show up an' act the part of UNSC savior."

Issues with authority. Check.

"I'll keep that in mind," Wash replied, humor coloring his voice.

Such issues. So many. Very wow. And, y'know, most of the government agencies he knew of were a) corrupt, and b) had him on one list or another. It didn't make for a lot of trust.

"So, any particular reason the UNSC's sendin' a member of their special group back in time to teach a buncha teens?"

Oh, you had no idea how much that would make Wash laugh to hear applied to someone else.

"I'm sure they have their reasons." A test for him, no doubt. They ways did like their tests at Project Freelancer.

See how loyal he really was before putting him near anything sensitive again.

"Sure they do. Government agencies always got their reasons. I'm sure that's a comfort to everybody involved."

"I'll let you know if it involves your team," Wash replied, way more than willing to take a guess after two very similar responses.

Hardison froze. "Who says I got a team?" he demanded.

You did, Hardison. With everything about that answer.

Yeah, Wash was going to let Hardison contemplate that strategy in silence. Judgemental silence.

"...Yo, I'mma take a do-over on that one, a'ight?"

Judgemental silence. It's super effective.

"Probably a smart move."

Hardisons took 1.5X damage from it, it was true!

"Man, I ain't even gonna bother lyin' about it. Lemme tell you the straight up truth instead," Hardison said, crossing his arms over his chest. Look, he and Eliot had unconsciously learned to mirror one another's moves over a number of years. "Anythin' relatin' to your damn agency reasons comes near me an' my team, it's gonna go real different than you expect."

There. Better.

"That I don't doubt." Human error was hard to quantify after all.
