Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The last picnic for new arrivals had involved a bonfire, but there was no need for artificial warmth today. The weather outside was sunny, and just breezy enough that no one would roast, hopefully. There were tables and chairs arranged around the lawn, along with a long table of food, drinks, and desserts for anyone who stopped by.

There were stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Oh." Oh. The tension drained out of Ringo's shoulders, and a smile blossomed across her face.

"In that case, I'm Ringo Noyamano." She bowed, bending slightly at the waist for a second before straightening up. "It's very nice to meet you!"

"Likewise," Face said with a grin. "You a dancer?" She definitely moved like one.

"A dancer?" Ringo blinked, clearly not following the question. "Not... not really. I mean," her hands moved up, adjusting the straps of her backpack slightly, "I don't think that turning up the music in your room real loud and dancing along counts... does it?"

"I'm certainly not going to say it doesn't," Face said. "Just the way you move, I've only seen that with dancers before."

"Oh." Ringo's cheek colored slightly. "Um... maybe it's because I ride ATs?"

She'd... never, precisely, thought of it as being like dancing, but... now that Face had suggested it, Ringo really liked the idea.

Face tilted his head curiously. "Is that some kind of ship?"

The closest thing he could think of were imperial walkers, and he doubted they'd give anyone any sort of grace.

"Huh? No... You know, ATs? AirTrek?"

"We don't have them where I'm from," Face said, shaking his head.

Oh! Ringo suddenly grinned. "Oh, oh," her hand swung up to pull the backpack from her shoulders. "I can show you!"

Someone was very, very excited about ATs.

Face grinned back. "All right then."

Ringo knelt down and unzipped the backpack, pulling it open and lifting out a pair of... well, they looked a lot like inline skates, but with only two wheels. "ATs!" she declared, holding them up for Face to look at as if it was obvious how awesome they were.

Face could tell how awesome they were, but mostly from Ringo's tone of voice since it was the exact same one he used when talking about snubfighters. "So you wear them?" he asked.

She nodded very, very enthusiastically. "They have miniaturized motors in the wheels," she explained happily. "Once you get the basics down, you can practically fly!"

They were sort of the best thing ever.

Face whistled, duly impressed, since pilot wannabe. "I take it you're pretty good with them."

That earned a sort of awkward shrug. "Pretty good? I've been riding for, well, it feels like forever..."

She glanced down at Face's feet, which were not really close to the same size as hers. Still! "If... if you like, I could probably get some in your size? If... if you wanted to try them?"

"I'd like that, if you can." They sounded pretty awesome.

Well, now face was getting Ringo's biggest, beamingest smile. "I will!" she declared excitedly. "ATs are the best?" Had she mentioned that they were the best?

Face was definitely getting that impression. "I should probably get around to doing my job first, though," he said. "Is there anything you'd like to know about the school or the island?"

Oh, good point!

Ringo grinned a bit sheepishly, and knelt to put her ATs back in the backpack. "Oh, yes. I suppose that might help."

"Um... the most important thing is, I guess, whether I can ride around the island without getting in trouble?"

Face thought about it. "We can go by the Trooper office to double check if you want, but I don't see why not," he said. "The only issues I can think of are the possibility of running into people, which I assume you already know how to avoid, and if there's enough space to ride in."

On account of all the stairs.

"Double-checking probably couldn't hurt," Ringo agreed. "And I suppose I haven't really had time to look through the town in detail, but from what little I saw it should be amazing to ride."

Stairs were amazing. They provided great excuses to wall-ride.

Face could definitely see how that worked, but he was at least theoretically supposed to ensure no one's neck got broken. "You should be all good then."

"Yay!" Yeah. She actually said "yay". And did it while jumping up and down excitedly.

Then she realized what she was doing, and grounded herself, staring sheepishly at her feet.

"Er. Sorry about that."

Like Face was ever going to tell someone to calm down (if it wasn't a life or death situation, and sometimes not even then).

"It's no problem," he said. "Pretty sure welcome picnics are custom made for excitement."

Ringo relaxed again, grinning back at him. "Well, I guess I was kind of half-worried that it would be hard to find a place to ride." So a "it's probably okay" was a huge relief.
