Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The last picnic for new arrivals had involved a bonfire, but there was no need for artificial warmth today. The weather outside was sunny, and just breezy enough that no one would roast, hopefully. There were tables and chairs arranged around the lawn, along with a long table of food, drinks, and desserts for anyone who stopped by.

There were stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Clarke lifted her eyebrows. Her confusion briefly dimmed in the face of a jerk with a bird insulting her.

"And what's your name then?"

"Ronan," he answered easily. "The bird's called Chainsaw. I'm supposed to be your big sibling. Fair warning, I don't know what the hell that means or how I got the job."

Oh yeah the name Clarke was way weirder than Ronan. Sure.

"The feeling is mutual because I don't have any idea where the hell I am," Clarke said. "I was in the woods and then I went through a door and somehow I ended up here. I don't even know where here is."

"It's Virginia," he told her in a rare moment of helpfulness. "You probably fell through a portal. Lucky you coming here without meaning to come here."

What he meant was unlucky her. He'd, at least, had time to prepare.

"The whole woods thing explains why it looks like you just had a roll around in the dirt. No showers where you're from? Or water period?"

Clarke frowned. Yeah she really did not want this guy as a sibling or whatever. "How did you guys manage to avoid...everything?"

You know, the nuclear fallout and such.

Ronan looked at her blankly.

"Avoid what?" he finally asked. "The influx of stupid boy bands? The baggy jeans fad? Pagers?"

"Nuclear war?" Duh.

"What?"

That actually brought Ronan up short. To fill the silence, Chainsaw chirped a few times, eyes still on Clarke.

"Nuclear war never happened here. Not yet, at least." He wouldn't be surprised if the world came to that, though. "There was nothing for us to avoid."

"I--" That could not be true. It wasn't even possible. "I really have no idea what's going on."

"Where the hell did you come from that there was some nuclear war?" he asked her. "Things got that shitty?"

"Like you wouldn't believe," she said. "Most of humanity survived by leaving Earth and living on space stations. I was one of the first to land on the planet in almost a hundred years."

That meant this was the past? Clarke was getting a headache.

"You are a long way from home," Ronan told her, glancing at the still chirping bird on his shoulder. He quieted her with a look. "The only shit in space is satellites and space stations. No one lives there permanently."

He shook his head, trying to comprehend what she was saying. "You fell into a hell of a portal. Humanity's still a pile of steaming crap but we're all still here."

"Great," she said, running a hand through her hair. "What am I supposed to do now?"

"Oh, I dunno," he said, glancing at her from head to toe. "Take a shower? Eat some food? Get a tan?"

Just some suggestions.

Clarke rolled her eyes. "You know, I really don't think I'll need your help so you can consider yourself released from this whole big sibling thing."

"Hey, I was just trying to be helpful," he told her, smirking. "But, sounds like you've got bigger problems than me. Good luck finding your way, Clarke."
