Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The last picnic for new arrivals had involved a bonfire, but there was no need for artificial warmth today. The weather outside was sunny, and just breezy enough that no one would roast, hopefully. There were tables and chairs arranged around the lawn, along with a long table of food, drinks, and desserts for anyone who stopped by.

There were stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

As soon as he'd stepped foot on this island, his father's voice had kicked into high gear, positively gleeful about a new situation and new people that Jasper could perfect his craft against.

Wait, not his craft. No. I will never kill.

He took a breath and schooled his features while he glanced around for someone named Ringo something or other. He suddenly missed Howie really badly.

Ringo had seen some of the other students with name tags, and realized that if someone was looking for her, that might make it easier.

Of course she'd written "野山野 林檎" on the little adhesive rectangle before she caught herself, and so "Ringo Noyamano" looked a little cramped squeezed in below it.

Now to find her roommate. A "Jasper". She was half-excited, half-trepidatious. She'd never shared a room with anyone but her sisters before. She hoped that they got along!

When she passed by him, Jasper squinted at her nametag and then glanced away. But, something made him look back and his eyes caught on the small print on the bottom.

"Oh hey, you're Ringo?" he asked, holding up a hand to get her attention.

She'd halfway passed him when his gesture caught her eye, and Ringo spun to face him. It was almost a dancer's movement, weight gracefully balanced on one foot, pigtails swaying slightly.

"Yes?" she said, smiling a bit uncertainly as her weight settled on both feet again.

Jasper tapped the nametag on his chest.

"You might be looking for me?"

That got a confused frown for a moment. She might be...? Oh!

"Jasper?" Her smile was awkward, and it was a question rather than a triumphant exclamation, but she was pretty sure that that was what he had meant.

"Roommate," he filled in, letting his arm drop. "Unless I read the forms wrong but I'm pretty sure I didn't. Hello."

Ringo's body language tensed slightly as a mild sense of awkwardness stole over her. "Oh." She smiled suddenly. "It's very nice to meet you, Jasper. I'm Ringo Noyamano. It looks like we'll be sharing a room?"

Introductions were important! Even if they were a bit awkward because she hadn't realized she'd be sharing a room with, well, a boy.

The tension and awkwardness were very noticeable and Jasper smiled apologetically.

"Guessing you didn't expect this? Or me?"

"What? Oh!" Ringo shook herself, some of the awkwardness falling away as she shook her head, pigtails swaying again. "I, um... I suppose it is a surprise, yes. But!" she added quickly, lest he get the wrong idea, "not a bad one! Just... a surprise."

"I'll stay out of your way," he promised, now trying to figure out how he could set up his things, his board, without freaking her out. "Promise. You won't even know I'm there."

"Oh, no!" Ringo said quickly, this time chuckling in genuine humor. "Please, don't trouble yourself. I'm used to sharing space. At home, I share a room with three sisters, so I'm not sure what I'd do with myself if no one were around."

She ducked her head slightly, flushing, as her voice grew slightly quieter. "I just thought that my roommate would be a girl, is all."

"That's understandable," Jasper said, nodding. "I'm definitely no girl. Guess this place is coed. It'll be all right. I'll be a gentleman."

His grandmother would argue that he had no manners but his grandmother was also back home, alone. The thought made him internally wince.

Ringo rolled her eyes in amusement. "I'm sure it'll work out. After all, you can't be worse than my adopted brother." Though, to be fair, Ringo didn't share a room with Ikki...

"I'm sure too," Jasper said though his mind was already whirring away now that he had to adjust to the thought of living in close quarters with someone. "I'll see you in the room, then."

"Sure!" Ringo agreed. She opened her mouth, as if she were going to say something else, but closed it and smiled. Then she offered him a short, polite bow, bending at the waist. "I look forward to it."
