Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The last picnic for new arrivals had involved a bonfire, but there was no need for artificial warmth today. The weather outside was sunny, and just breezy enough that no one would roast, hopefully. There were tables and chairs arranged around the lawn, along with a long table of food, drinks, and desserts for anyone who stopped by.

There were stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Disappointed?" Ender asked, passing him the plate.

"A little, yeah," Ben said, reaching for a cookie.

"I'm sorry," Ender said softly. "Maybe she'll stop by later in the summer."

"That would be astral," Ben said, holding out the plate to Ender. "I know the veggie sticks are for you, kreetle."

"I was actually trying to sneak them in there for you," Ender admitted (which was why there weren't any carrot sticks), but he grabbed one anyway.

Ben grabbed a pepper (mostly to appease Ender) and smiled. "I'll eat one with you. Worrier."

"Someone needs to make sure you get your vitamins," Ender said, smiling back at him.

Ben gave him a quick kiss on the nose. "Love you."

Ender smiled at him.

"What do you think of this crop of students and teachers?" he asked. "I'm seeing a lot of new faces."

"Still ridiculously good looking," Ben said with a grin, "so that hasn't changed."

Ender chuckled. "Should I be worried?" he said.

(No, but Ben might be when Brian showed up.)

"Never," Ben said, beaming at him.

Ender reached out to squeeze Ben's hand - the one that wasn't holding the plate, of course. "Your grandfather still seems the same as ever."

"It's getting kind of creepy," Ben admitted. "I mean, we're aging. Him...not really."

"Maybe they worked something into his DNA when they cloned him," Ender said wryly.

"To make up for the hair, probably," Ben agreed.

Ender smiled. "You think the hair is a cloning accident?" he said. "I doubt it."

"My hair doesn't do that, and you've seen Dad. He's a disaster."

Ender smiled. "Maybe you got the hair genes from your grandmother," he said.

"And yet I've never felt the need to wear a basket on my head."

Beat.

"Drinking nights with Warren and Tony don't count."

"Didn't you twist your hair up around nachos at one point?" Ender asked, without missing a beat.

"Yes, but I looked fantastic," Ben said, laughing.

"You look fantastic a lot of the time," Ender said, "But that wasn't one of those times."

Probably. Ben was an enthusiastic texter when he was drunk.

"Five," Ender said. "I'd show you, but I'm a little afraid one of the students might hack into the feed."

Not that Jane would let them.
