Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The last picnic for new arrivals had involved a bonfire, but there was no need for artificial warmth today. The weather outside was sunny, and just breezy enough that no one would roast, hopefully. There were tables and chairs arranged around the lawn, along with a long table of food, drinks, and desserts for anyone who stopped by.

There were stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Cosima was actually pretty pleased when she saw her roommate assignment. Not that she'd gotten a lot of time to talk to Ada on the way to the island, but anybody whose opening gambit was to kick her ass at three-card monte seemed like she'd be a chill person to live with. She looked for Ada to tell her the good news.

Cosima, huh? Ada could handle that. "I've never had a roommate before," she warned, "--and, ah, I have a medical condition, so I hope you don't mind dehumidifiers."

A lot of dehumidifiers.

"Nope, they're fine with me," Cosima said. She'd spent enough time in doctors' offices to be sympathetic to sick kids. "I've never had a roomie either, so we can figure it out together."

She looked Ada over, decided to risk a question. "But speaking of random personal quirks, do you have any strong feelings about pot either way?"

Not that she'd necessarily smoke in the room -- it was probably against the rules, and she didn't know anybody to buy from here to start with -- but it was worth knowing off the bat just in case.

"Some of the cousins smoke it," she said, giving a shrug. "--and make a few bucks dealing to townies, but I've never tried it." Because Uncle would kill her. Ada was supposed to be good. "Why?"

Cosima shrugged. "I like it, but I'm not some crazy stoner who's going to bring it to the room all the time or anything. Especially not until I know how strict this place is."

"Just open the window after and it's fine with me," Ada decided. "Can you believe this place so far?"

Said the girl who'd scooped up some of the free-range glitter and put it in her hair.

"I don't even know if I believe it or not," Cosima admitted, looking around. "There was that girl in the alien cosplay on the shuttle, and my big brother has a pet osmingo, whatever that is, and it seems like half the people didn't mean to come here and just randomly fell through a wormhole, which completely breaks the laws of physics, and ...oh my god is that a pink pony over there?"

"My big sister has hair." Ada gestured around her own head. "So. Much. Hair."

She followed Cosima's gaze and... "Wow. Uncle Chester would pay a mint to have that in the carnival. Think it's naturally pink, or did they dye the poor thing?"

"I bet it's dye," Cosima speculated. "Poor thing. Wonder how they get it to stand still so they can paint it."

"Ponies are lazy creatures, standing still is their favorite pasttime," Ada said. "The paint, I don't know. I don't think many of our ponies would stand still for it."

"Mmmmm. So you really did grow up in a carnival?" Cosima asked, curious. "With horses and rides and everything?"

"I can assemble a ferris wheel and everything," Ada confirmed. "Dancing girls, midway games, biological impossibilities, the works."

"Cool," Cosima said approvingly. "I'm from San Francisco. Pretty much the only one on that list we have all the time is dancing girls."

"A town without a carnival?" Ada put her hand to her heart. "That's just inhumane!"

She swept a theatrical bow. "Ada Miller of the Miller Family Carnival, at your service. We normally run the South, San Diego up through Tennessee and North Carolina, and overwinter in Arizona."

"We get carnivals," Cosima assured her. "Just not every single week, the way you have it if you live in one. I always liked the food best. All the weird fried things."

"The whole thing runs on cotton candy dreams," Ada said loftily. "...No, really. That's all I eat when I'm wandering around shilling for the midway games, pretending the games are so easy to win. By the end of the night all I want is a salad bigger than my head."
