Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The last picnic for new arrivals had involved a bonfire, but there was no need for artificial warmth today. The weather outside was sunny, and just breezy enough that no one would roast, hopefully. There were tables and chairs arranged around the lawn, along with a long table of food, drinks, and desserts for anyone who stopped by.

There were stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I get a big brother?" Jesse greeted him skeptically, wandering over. "Oh boy. Are you gonna teach me to ride a bike?"

"Do you not know how to yet?" Ezra asked, then tilted his head head way to the side because what good was a gesture if it wasn't theatrical? (A lot, actually, but not this particular gesture.) "Actually, half the island is stairs. It's not avery useful skill here."

"Yeah, I noticed that," Jesse replied, wincing a little. "I bet it's...great exercise, or whatever. And yeah, I already know how, but I've never been anyone's little brother before. Just trying to fit the role."

Poorly. Though at least he was in a slightly better mood than he'd been before the plane landed.

And Ezra, being Ezra, was in a relentlessly good mood. He waved a hand. "You can save all that for when the island starts getting to you with how weird it is."

He paused and reconsidered, with a critical look at Jesse.

"Unless you're used to weird stuff. Are you?"

"I mean...." Jesse looked vaguely uncomfortable, because admitting to the kind of weird stuff he was used to seemed like a great way to admit that he thought he was supposed to be at military school, and maybe they'd correct that mistake, here. "What kind of weird stuff?"

Because he'd done mushrooms and saw a hand grow out of his friend's head a few weeks ago. That was pretty weird.

"Actual weird stuff. Not, for instance, drug hallucinations." You smelled like pot to his keen senses, Jesse. So he was pointing that out in case his logic tried to run that way. "Like, say, running into an actual living and breathing talking pony, who exist in the world and not just in your head."

Jesse was just going to stare for a minute, if you didn't mind, Ezra.

"A...talking pony," he repeated. "And it's real. Let's say I believe you -- why a pony? Are you guys, like, doing freaky genetic experimenting here?" He dropped his voice. "Should I be worried?"

He was only half-kidding, honestly. It would explain how he wasn't at military school, and things like that girl in the purple suit from the bus ride....

"She usually teaches something to do with either baking or friendship, and I don't think she's an experiment. She just... is." He shrugged. "I don't think that's something you need to worry about, although I hear sometimes she shoots glitter out of a cannon."

"Uh huh." Jesse remained skeptical. "The brochure for sure did not mention talking ponies, by the way. Like this place is asking for a lawsuit by not advertising that part."

Or something. It sounded right.

"Okay, no, seriously -- am I on a hidden camera show or something? You guys have to stop rolling if I catch wise, right?"

"Sorry, no," Ezra replied with another shrug. "I would try to lead you into the weird a little more gradually, but the pony is pretty obvious, and she tends to show up to these things. So I'm giving you fair warning, at the risk of sounding completely insane in the process."

"You do sound completely insane, but you know you do, which makes me think you're not." Jesse's brain was starting to hurt. "Okay. So there's a talking pony. What else do I need to know about?"

Because he was pretty sure that a list that started with 'talking pony' was probably kind of a doozy, whether he believed it or not.

"There's deer in the preserve," Ezra said. "They're teal, but they don't talk. Or at least they've never talked to me."

He was a fox, though, so they could've just been wary of him. He didn't know.

"Apart from that, let's go with something very basic: Fandom's kind of an.... interdimensional hub. People here are from all over. And I mean, all over. Space, past, future - you name it, it's probably in the junior class."
