BWI Airport, Portalocity Lounge

So ... this was the East coast, huh?

Cosima wasn't sure what she had expected to see, and the bland nothing of an airport lounge wasn't giving her much of an impression of her new home yet. She felt a sudden twist of worry mixed with homesickness. Maybe she shouldn't have obeyed the impulsiveness that had led her to transfer to some tiny boarding school thousands of miles from home. Not that San Francisco was doing anything great for her lately, but at least she knew people there.

If she looked at it logically, she knew not to let her nerves wreck the experience. School would be fine, and if it wasn't, she could go home at the end of the summer -- or even sooner if she wanted. But logic wasn't the easiest thing to have when you were 16 and alone in a strange airport.

She lounged in a hard airport chair, earbuds in, and poked at her phone until she found a new science podcast to listen to. It was comforting.

Lottie was fascinated by the guy in the body armor. "Are you in the French Foreign Legion?"

It was a logical conclusion. If you were Lottie.

"No. No, I'm not." He was also horrified at how curious he was that she managed to jump to that conclusion somehow. "You can call me Agent Washington."

Which wasn't French at all. So.

"CIA!" Lottie decided. "Wait, you're not very covert."

"Not with the CIA either." And excuse you, he was super covert. If he was hiding on a freeway. All that grey and yellow would blend right in.

He was a mystery! Lottie's instinct was to investigate immediately, but she was a cool teenager now, and suddenly remembered that enthusiasm was for children. "Oh. Well. Whatever."

"Right," Wash replied slowly. "That's it?"

"What's it? I'm not makin you wear the silly armor." Maybe she'd trick him into telling her who was making him wear the armor -- no, dammit! That was investigating!

"No. You're not." He was going to be extra cryptic now, Lottie. Hope you know this.

To spite the fourteen year old. That was mature.

"You should take it off," she said. "It's makin you stand out like a sore toe."

That was not the saying at all.

Deal with it. Deal with it.

"And taking it off would help me fit in." Sure it would.

"Well, do you see anyone else wearin body armors?" A beat. "Aside from that one girl."

"And the guy removing his clothes around teenage girls is so much better than that." Think about that one.

"You're not wearin anything under that?!" Lottie was totally scandalized. Scandalized, she tells ya.

"You've figured me out," Wash replied dryly. "Is there someone in charge around here?"

Lottie looked around. "I think you're the closest thing we've got to an adult."

And she'd already decided he didn't count. Telling her he was naked under his armor and all.

"The closest thing?" He was an adult! He was the most adult to ever adult! He paid taxes.

"I reckon I can't tell for sure," Lottie said. "Under the helmet you could be a highly intelligent baby."

Or an alien made out of onions. Really, anything was possible.

"Still not taking off the helmet." He was onto you, Lottie.

"Suit yourself, Baby Washington."

"Agent."

"Agent Baby."

"Agent Washington."

"Baby Agent Washington."

Lottie was 14. She could keep this up all day.

This is why he wasn't looking forward to teaching! This right here!

"Right. I'm going to go over there and let you enjoy yourself."

"That's well nice of you," Lottie said. "Most babies don't have such a well-developed sense of empathy."
