BWI Airport, Portalocity Lounge

So ... this was the East coast, huh?

Cosima wasn't sure what she had expected to see, and the bland nothing of an airport lounge wasn't giving her much of an impression of her new home yet. She felt a sudden twist of worry mixed with homesickness. Maybe she shouldn't have obeyed the impulsiveness that had led her to transfer to some tiny boarding school thousands of miles from home. Not that San Francisco was doing anything great for her lately, but at least she knew people there.

If she looked at it logically, she knew not to let her nerves wreck the experience. School would be fine, and if it wasn't, she could go home at the end of the summer -- or even sooner if she wanted. But logic wasn't the easiest thing to have when you were 16 and alone in a strange airport.

She lounged in a hard airport chair, earbuds in, and poked at her phone until she found a new science podcast to listen to. It was comforting.

When Washington had been given the coordinates for transport to his new assignment, he'd pictured something a little more space-worthy. And a little less surrounded by teenage civilians.

Okay, so Blue had been prepared for this place being nontraditional (Persephone had heard of it. It couldn't be entirely normal), but not one but two people in full body armor waiting for the shuttle bus was a bit much.

"Was I supposed to have a costume?" she asked.

"Was I supposed to wear a costume?" she repeated. "Is that a tradition?" Ugh, private schools and their traditions. She guessed she'd have to get used to it now. "I guess I can throw something together before we leave..."

Her wardrobe included a shirt made out of soda can tabs. She could do this.

"I'm not wearing a costume," Wash replied, wishing for a firefight right now. Maybe an alien invasion? He'd even settle for a car crash. Anything that didn't involve being here. "It's armor."

"Okay," Blue said in her 'humoring people' voice. It sounded a lot like her normal voice, only slower, because she was Southern. "Why are you wearing armor to go to summer camp if it's not a costume?"

It was a valid question, Wash. Teenagers weren't that scary.

"What." Oh, he was going to enjoy getting revenge for this. The whole Epsilon thing was bad, but high school? That was just petty.

"This is the shuttle for summer camp at Fandom High," Blue told him. "Or at least that girl over there said it was." Yes, she was putting blame off on Lottie if at least one of them was being punked.

Wash took a moment to take a deep, soothing breath. And possibly count to ten.

"Great," he finally said, voice flat. "A summer camp."

That was super rude, Cosima. You can't just ask people why they wear full body armor all the time. God.

"It's standard issue." What's with the not wearing body armor, huh?

"Standard issue for standing around an airport?" Cosima asked, sounding equal parts terrified and intrigued. "Is there a terror alert going on or something?"

Was he on Earth? Holy crap, was he on Earth?

Cosima looked around with exaggerated curiosity. "An airport lounge?" she tried. "Someplace in Maryland?"

Seriously, had he hit his head?

"Interesting."

And that wasn't cryptic or anything.

"Fascinating," Cosima agreed, a little snarkily. "Like, that Starbucks over there? Very exotic."

Well, they had Starbucks everywhere. It was like a disease.

Next logical answer for him. Also, ignoring the snark. Because rude.

Lottie was fascinated by the guy in the body armor. "Are you in the French Foreign Legion?"

"No. No, I'm not." He was also horrified at how curious he was that she managed to jump to that conclusion somehow. "You can call me Agent Washington."

Which wasn't French at all. So.

"Not with the CIA either." And excuse you, he was super covert. If he was hiding on a freeway. All that grey and yellow would blend right in.

He was a mystery! Lottie's instinct was to investigate immediately, but she was a cool teenager now, and suddenly remembered that enthusiasm was for children. "Oh. Well. Whatever."

"What's it? I'm not makin you wear the silly armor." Maybe she'd trick him into telling her who was making him wear the armor -- no, dammit! That was investigating!
