Baking: Sweet and Savory | Monday, 3rd period

"So." Hannibal smiled at the students once they settled in. "If you've had my class before, you know what your final is." Or if you'd read and remembered the syllabus, but he knew enough about teenagers to know the likelihood of that.

He spread his hands. "Bake me something. Bake me several somethings. Use as many of the things we've learned in class as you can. I am here if you have questions."

Bake things! Lots of things! Share them with your class and teacher! Poisoning anyone is an AUTOMATIC FAIL.

Okay, so maybe something simple that he could sort of half-brain work on, like banana bread, and then Sparkle could focus on something a little more complicated at the same time, liiiike a chocolate soufflé.

Okay so he needed a bit more attention for the soufflé, because if it fell too soon he was going to be really put-out, but at least there was some trade-off, since the banana bread was supposed to be so dense?

That was Sparkle's story and he was going to stick to it. And maybe work on a chocolate sauce for the soufflé, too. Because he was ambitious like that.

Hannibal approved of ambitiousness. And was giving Sparkle a smile and a pat on the shoulder to show it.

COSETTE WOULD NEVER POISON ANYONE.

Her puff pastry left a little something to be desired, though; it wasn't quite as airy as it ought to be, but her mind was elsewhere today.

GOOD BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE A TERRIBLE WASTE OF FOOD.

"I think you could get a bit more air into these," Hannibal said, "but your presentation is lovely."

"Thank you very much, monsieur. It could have benefited from being folded several more times," Cosette agreed with a halfhearted smile. "I was beginning to be concerned about running short of time, though."

Because she'd let her mind wander more often than she usually did, but still.

Hannibal smiled in understanding. "Did you have a guest this weekend?"

"I did." While Cosette did seem wistful about the whole thing, she didn't look like she was likely to start crying any time soon. "It was . . . an unexpected, if nice, surprise."

"I'm glad," Hannibal said. "Some people seem not to have enjoyed it; it's good you did."

"No, I can't imagine it was a great deal of fun for most people," agreed Cosette. "What about you, monsieur? Did anyone come to visit you?"

"Yes." Hannibal nodded at her. "But we're on our own again now. We must get on with our lives."

Yesss! Sparkle had survived the entire weekend without stumbling over any dead people, and today they got to just go nuts with baking? He was going to consider this week a win.

Maybe he wouldn't even die at his own graduation this weekend! You never knew, right?

Anything was possible!

"You're certain I can't tempt you into staying on for the summer?" Hannibal asked.

"Pretty sure," Sparkle said, giving Hannibal a wry little smile. "I think the whole thing with Gaunt was my last straw, around here. These things happen like clockwork through the summer, and I'm not going to be the idiot who says, 'sure, one more summer can't hurt' just to end up getting myself, like, eaten by giant hamsters or something."

"No giant hamsters." Hannibal smiled. "Well, you'll have to phone and give me your address. For gourmet care packages."

"I think I can handle that," Sparkle replied. "Lewis says he has a new place lined up, anyway. He's been saving up for a while for a bigger house, and even I don't know the address of this one. So I'll call once I'm back in Toronto and we've settled, how's that sound?"

"That sounds perfect." Hannibal squeezed Sparkle's shoulder. "For now, I'll let you get back to your chocolate."

Sparkle gave a cheeky little grin at that.

"Sounds great. Maybe I'll be able to get this thing to turn out the way it's supposed to."

And even if it fell, at least it would be delicious.

"I have no doubt."

Yay finals!
