Her mother had appeared in her dreams again last night, even though Cosette hadn't been able to approach her with any more success than in her dream the night before that, and it put her in a rather pensive frame of mind. How did she even know that was her mother, when she'd never seen so much as a rough sketch of what the woman looked like? What did her father mean about martyrdom? And why did she have the odd, reassuring feeling that if she kept dreaming about this, she might get some answers to her questions?

Possibly, the number of stories about families that kept popping up for reshelving today weren't helping to take her mind off the subject, but it wasn't a painful subject by any means, just one that prompted a lot of curiosity, so even if she was thoughtful and a bit distracted today she was in perfectly good spirits. ~~*rimshot*~~ She might even have admitted to feeling a little bit eager, inexplicably.

Edward's mouth quirked a little. "Does seem like the sort of thing to make one linger on parenthood, aye," he said. "Your father-- he won't tell you more?"

Cosette shook her head, and she couldn't keep a tiny bit of her frustration from showing in the way she pressed her lips together and sighed. "No. I remember he used to tell me things when I was younger, but nothing very specific ~~because there was exactly one line about this sigh~~. I'm sure he has his reasons. I don't mind much, ordinarily."

"But now it's prodding at you," Edward said. He shrugged gently. "Have you tried asking him again?"

"He looks so sad whenever I ask, I can't bring myself to persist," Cosette admitted.

"You have a soft heart," Edward said.

He didn't sound like he disapproved terribly much. "Still, I can't imagine knowing so little of your own heritage." ~~Somewhere Connor Kenway goes AHAHAHHAHAhahalksjaljsdlasjdklsjad grandfather~~.

"He did tell me I got that from her, at least," Cosette offered a little more brightly. "Though I'm sure I learned it from him, as well."

She shrugged, took another bite of the apple, and chewed thoughtfully while she considered how to phrase her next comment.

"It never mattered to me much; I know it sounds callous, but I don't remember her at all, only that she existed once. And Father has been so good to me since he took me away from the place I lived before that I haven't felt as if I've missed much by not having her in my life."

"I couldn't imagine not having my mum in my life," Edward admitted.

Well, for some value of imagine that involved him being right here, right now, having put in no effort at all to contact his parents. "But I suppose one good parent can make up for some lack."

"I suppose he felt he had a great deal to make up for," Cosette said with a fond smile. "And I can't imagine him not being in mine, not any more. Were you close to your parents, growing up?"

Edward shrugged. "As much as any man whose parents lived to see him grow, I wager," he said. "We've been at odds, but they were always there. That makes the notion of not having one or the other stranger."

"Whereas I can't imagine that at all," Cosette replied.

Since the Thénardiers were not representative of a functional and conventional, as it were, family, and she was not taking them as an example of one.

"But what a gloomy thing to think about! I must beg your pardon, I'm not doing terribly well at entertaining you this afternoon."

Edward laughed softly.

"Don't worry about it," he said. "I asked. And I don't mind learning anything about you besides. You've lived an interesting life."

"How funny it is that you say that, when I feel as if I've lived anything but," Cosette exclaimed. "But then I think you might say the same if I told you I thought growing up on a farm sounded interesting, only because it's so different from what I know."

"I suppose it's the nature of man to be curious about what one does not know," Edward mused. "Farm's boring, though, unless you're particularly fond of sheep."

"Well, I do like animals," said Cosette, who was basically a talking animal sidekick short of being a Disney princess. "So your family dealt in wool, then?"

"Primarily, aye," Edward said. "The meat, too, whenever we needed a cull. But mostly the wool."

Which turned into the most boring thing in the world when you had to deal with it on a daily basis.

"They seem like nice creatures," Cosette mused. She was not thinking about what getting the meat entailed. "If peaceful. I can't imagine that being enough to satisfy your craving for adventure, though."
