Powers, Identity, and The World; Embracing the Real You - Friday, Period One
Today, class would have been handwavily notified via e-mail (or older methods, for the non-technologically-inclined) that they could bring along any pets they might have. In fact, both teachers had pets with them: a kitten was tucked safely in one of Jono's jacket pockets, and a medium-sized dog was curled up at Rinoa's feet.
"Pets!" she said, brightly, by way of greeting. "Everyone should have a pet. Whether you have powers or not, I mean, everyone. There's this tiny little furry thing who loves you, completely, even when you make mistakes."
Angelo was thumping her tail in agreement, even though she'd long passed "little."
"You don't have to get a furry pet, either," she said. "Maybe you're allergic to dogs and you want to get a lizard, or a guinea pig, or a cockatoo. Pets help to keep you grounded. They're a responsibility, but sure, but love them and feed them and that's pretty much all you need."
So maybe she was glossing over details. So what? Pets ruled.
"I got Angelo when I was fifteen, because I was lonely," she explained. "When I ran away from home, she came with me. When I got powers I couldn't even begin to understand, she was still right by my side. Sometimes it's hard to trust other people, or open up to them, but pets can just accept you as you are, and that's a really freeing sort of feeling."
She reached down to scritch behind Angelo's ears.
"So, if you brought a pet, you can talk about why you got him or her. If you didn't, you can talk about why you don't want one, or what kind you'd get if you did. Or you can just snuggle your pets, or snuggle someone else's pets. Come make friends with Angelo, because she's super-friendly."
