Baking: Sweet and Savory | Monday, 3rd period

Subject: Class, March 30th

Class this week will be held at my house on Phoenix Place, across from the school. Please show up on time and hungry.

Hannibal greeted the students as they filed in and led them to his kitchen. "Given recent events, I doubt very much that your attention will be up to cooking. And I'm given to believe that a bit of spoiling is still a good thing for those of you recovering. So. Today, you will watch me bake. And cook in other ways. Feel free to ask questions, and if you would like to help, just ask. Otherwise, sit and watch, and then you can help carry things to the dining room."

It's international comfort food time. Once you're all done cooking or watching, it's lunch in the dining room.

Kathy's eyes lit up. "Bibimbap!" she said, "ohmigosh, Dr. Lecter, you made bibimbap!"

For her.

Okay, well, for the whole class, obviously, but the reason it was there was because of her.

Hannibal gave Kathy a little bow and a smile. "I haven't made it before, so you'll have to tell me how I did." Not that he expected it to be anything less than perfect, but you never knew.

Kathy had no intentions of making him wait. She quickly put a small portion onto her plate and tried it.

Oh god it was heaven in her mouth. She had to pause to pile more onto her plate before she could reply.

"Okay, so, I'm pretty sure I'm culturally obligated to inform you that it's good, but it can't possibly hold a candle to any proper bibimbap that's been made by a tiny old ajumma in the heart of Koreatown, right after she berates you for being too thin," Kathy said. "But I'm also pretty sure that there would be a lightning bolt with my name on it if I tried telling a lie that big."

Hannibal laughed. "I will take that critique as read, then. Thank you." He nodded at the pot. "Whatever is left is yours to take with you."

"Thank you so much," Kathy said, reluctantly deciding not to hover over the pot and give the stink-eye to anyone that looked like they were going back for seconds. "Umm, I meant to ask--is your jacket okay?"

You know, the one she'd gotten egg all over?

"Fortunately, it was almost out of season."

That would be a no.

"But you're very welcome for the food."

He's here, and he's cooking!

When he pings in!

Sparkle was wearing one of his best 'I am perfectly okay dammit grins today. Which, in fairness, was pretty damn convincing. If you didn't know that he was a heartbroken mess, the only real outward indication as to how messed up he'd been was probably mostly just how much weight he'd lost.

Which made it fortunate that Hannibal had made ~~Kraft Dinner dammit~~ macaroni and cheese, didn't it?

Hannibal put a hand on Sparkle's shoulder as he led him in. He wasn't fooled by the grin, but he was willing to pretend. For the most part.

"I've chosen a few foods I hope you'll like; you can take all the leftovers home."

"Looking forward to it," Sparkle decided, nodding. "I'm pretty sure most people are too sick or too distracted to do much of anything safely, so this was a good call."

"You seem to be doing somewhat better," Hannibal said. "I've heard on the radio; I'm glad you've had friends around you. I would have liked to have been there as well, but I couldn't be everywhere."

Except for now, by having class at home.

"Hey, it happens," Sparkle replied with a shrug. "Like, Kenzi's been pretty good about letting me crash at her place, and I get to hang out with Atton and Karina tonight. She's got my cat, I need to get him back."

Since he'd sort of had critical cat owner fail something terrible, back there.

"You and yours make it through okay?"

"There were some difficulties, and Jono is still healing, but we will pull through." Hannibal rubbed Sparkle's back and smiled at him. "Would you like to help cook? You don't have to, but I would welcome your assistance."

"Sure," Sparkle replied, giving Hannibal a little smile back. "I'm more steady today than I've been all weekend. I probably won't end up like cutting off my own thumb or something."

"Please try not to." Hannibal smirked. "I didn't put thumb on the menu today."

Sparkle was going to just grin a little more and merrily barrel past memories of this time last year when alternate versions of either of them were super happy to sit down and eat people, because oh god what even.

"What is on the menu, anyway?"

That had been such an odd reality, hadn't it?

Hannibal arranged the recipe cards on the counter so Sparkle could see them. "What do you think?"

"I know what the macaroni is!" Little victories. "And cake and biscuits... sweet. What's cassoulet?"

His French was just fine, but that wasn't exactly a recipe that did its rounds through the group home corner of the world.

"French comfort food," Hannibal answered. "A bit of everything, baked in a large pot." He pointed out some of the ingredients. "Duck, sausage, beans."

"... I'm going to have to try that," Sparkle decided. "Duck. Nice."

For a meat that wasn't super commonly eaten around here, it sure tasted good.

"I'm fond of it. But the leftovers from that are Cosette's. You get the macaroni," he promised. "So, apron?" He got out two and held one out to Sparkle. "We can start by cutting vegetables."

"Apron," Sparkle agreed, accepting the one that was offered to him and pulling it on. "You can just tell me how we need them cut, and I'll get it done."

"I know you will." Hannibal tied his own on. "We've got some to chop, some to dice, and some to julienne." He pulled out a knife and spun it to hand Sparkle the handle.

Kathy's plate had a little bit of everything on it, but the lion's share of her plate was devoted to bibimbap. It was comfort food in a way that the other stuff couldn't be.

"Hey," she said softly, approaching Sparkle, proffering the plate. "Have you tried the bibimbap Dr. Lecter made? It's really good."

"I'm planning to try a bit of all of it," Sparkle replied, "but... you know. Heart's all set on the macaroni."

He was going to have, you know, a lot of that.

"... How're you?"

Kathy knew. It's sorta like how she was planning to have pretty much all of the bibimbap. Everyone could try some, but she was definitely staking a claim.

"I get that," she said. "But I brought some to share if you wanted."

His question, she answered with a shrug. It seemed the most concise way to do that. "How's you?"

"About the same," Sparkle decided, shrugging right back. "I... probably owe you, like... an apology."

There were not many people in the world that he'd give one of those to, Kathy. Feel special.

They were going to have a shrug-off at this rate. "Probably," she admitted. "If it helps, I totally know what you were going through when you had me...help." In fact, if she heard the whole story, she'd say Sparkle had a much better reason to steal something than she'd had. "He got me, too."

Hannibal totally did not pick a comfort food for every country there are students from. At all.

Just like I'm not hungry now. :P

*sneaks in, steals a bit of everything, and sneaks out* ;)

I don't think she would be there. She doesn't know Hannibal now, after all.
