Cole drops off an apple for the teacher.

Phoebe pulls him down to sit with her.

"Are you showing favoritism?" Cole said with a grin.

"Of course," she grinned back.

"Don't let the principal find out," he said, giving her a quick kiss.

"I love you."

"Love you, too, sweetheart," Cole murmured. He hesitated, then said, "Can I ask you a serious question?"

Phoebe looked at him. "Always."

"I ~~eavesdropped~~ overheard something this morning about why Veronica is afraid of fire, and I feel really guilty about what I did to her. Is there anything I can do to make things better?" Cole said. "I mean, we're never going to be friends, but I'd like to really apologize." He frowned, unused to such a thing.

Phoebe bit her lip, thinking. "Let me talk to Piper and see if we can figure out something for you, okay? She may not be receptive at first, but I think the fact that you are sincerely sorry about it will help." She placed a hand on his face. "I know that if it were me, if someone used my biggest fear against me that I might have a problem believing they regret it. We'll find a way, love."

"I know," he said. "I mean, I've done a lot of terrible things, and I can never apologize to the...the witches that I...." He let that thought die. "But at least with Veronica I can try to make up for what I did. That's the good thing to do, right?"

Phoebe nodded and smiled at him. "Yes, love, it's the very good thing to do."

Phoebe pretends to not hear the witches part.

"I don't know how to act anymore," he confessed. "I mean, before I just cared about myself and getting respect. Then I cared about you, too. Now there are people who want to be my friends and people that I've hurt that I feel bad about."

"Can I ask you a question, love?"

"Sure, what?"

"When you realized that you not only wanted me, but loved me as well, and you had hurt me... what was the first thing you decided to do to try to fix that?"

"I wanted to hold you and tell you I loved you," he said. "Ummm...that won't work for Veronica."

Phoebe shook her head. "No, that won't work." She kissed him.

"Flowers... non-threatening gifts... letting her approach you first." She ran her thumb along the back of his hand. "The important thing to remember is that you are sincere and you do regret what you did to her. Work on you first, soulmate."

She smiled into his eyes. "I know all of this is new to you and you're floundering a little bit. Unlike before, you're not alone. You have me. You have Angel. You have people that saw there is good in you."

"I should send her flowers?" Cole said. "I can do that. Should I just say I'm sorry and leave it at that?"

He leaned forward and rested his head on her shoulder. "Being good is hard."

"I'd suggest doing both," she said softly. "Make the first steps and then stay back. Let her decide if she'll take the next step or not."

She held him to her. "I know, Beloved. I know and I wish I could make it so much easiern for you."

"I'll see what I can find at the flower shop," Cole said. "They don't make a 'I'm sorry I tried to kill you' bouquet, do they?"

He signed and hugged her tight. "Just being here is enough," he said.

Phoebe held him to her. "I don't know if they make one of those," she said softly. "But I will always be here for you."

"Thank you," he said softly.

"You're very welcome, love."
