John had gone home long enough to get a good three hours of sleep in, shower, and then gotten back up and come into work.

Real coffee was out, you could ask for tea if you wanted it, and the librarian was in-and-out of Special Collections, bringing out the oldest books and scrolls he could find.

Good luck, Fandom. You were going to need it.

"The squirrels are making stuff up," Atton said immediately. "Stupid rodents, gossiping all the time, it's like they don't have anything better to do..."

"Oh, really?" Karina asked, looking even more amused. "You expect me to believe you?"

"Why would I throw a pizza at his window?" Atton pointed out. Logically! ... With a lot more logic than his sleep-deprived brain had managed yesterday. "It's not like he's from a species that absorbs nutrients through glass."

"Are there species that absorb nutrients through glass?" she asked, and then shook her head. "No, wait, I don't care. But, I'm just saying, I don't know why you did it, but I'm going to believe radio more than you given how extremely embarrassed you must be at your total lack of thinking through your plan with the window."

Did he even think about it? She didn't know.

He'd been trying to open the window! It wasn't his fault it'd been seven years since he last saw the inside of one of those dorm rooms!

"No, it's the squirrels," Atton retorted. "They have it in for me. They might have it in for both of us. First they're mocking me, tomorrow they're mocking you...!"

Stop digging, Rand.

Karina actually laughed.

"Pretty sure they're just going to keep on mocking you," she said, feeling glad she'd come here, even if it had just been for this. "You're making it really easy."

"Why do I ever even try to reason with teenagers?" Atton muttered.

Oh, please.

"Because you like futile endeavours," Karina said lightly. "Especially since this one makes you look ridiculous."

"I don't," Atton groused. "I like nice, non-futile, non-ridiculous things, like getting to sit at home with a pizza and a terrible holovid while the rest of you are all safe in your dorm rooms." Beat. "And the squirrels are passed-out drunk, while we're at it."

"Tell you what," she replied, "when this is all over, we can drag Sparkle to your place and do the pizza thing. You can even throw pizza at him then. Maybe it'll be able to eat it without the glass in the way."

"Oh, and now you're trying to mooch free pizza and free cable off of me," Atton groused.

Because so help him, he would have something to complain about.

"But fine. I mean, you're the one who's been dragging him into the shower on the regular."

Ugh. Don't remind her. She shuddered.

"Let us never speak of that again," she ordered. "But yes, definitely. I am going to mooch free pizza and cable off of you as a reward. And I'll bring Sparkle with me so you can deal with him."

It'd be much easier to do so when he was in his right mind and not sick, so it wasn't fair anyway, but whatever.

Atton rolled his eyes. "Okay, let's agree on one thing here right now, though," he said, "Sparkle does not get to pick any toppings. That is a deal breaker."

The face she made at that clearly indicated that Karina knew some of what Sparkle was inclined to think might make a good topping combination.

"Deal," she said quickly. "Sparkle gets no choice in toppings. At all."
