The Library - Tuesday

With all the freaky shit going on with the island today, Barry decided it would be a good idea to make sure the library was open today for any researchers to do some researching.

He was even nice enough to have coffee brought in from the perk. Normal coffee. Nothing that may have been brewed with acorns or anything.

For his part Barry was behind the main desk doing his own research by remotely accessing his lab via his tablet but would be available for anyone if they had questions.

"That's not taxing at all," Cosette said, brightening considerably at the prospect of being some degree of helpful. "Just tell me which books you need, and I'll be happy to carry them."

"Wonderful." Bob waved toward the section he was on as he headed for it. "They're right over here. I can read them on the shelves, but it's much easier if they're flat on a table or something."

"You can read them still on the shelves? Closed and all?" Cosette asked, following along. "Of course I'll get them down for you, but that seems like it could be useful sometimes."

"Not as useful as being able to pick them up and open them," Bob pointed out, "but it does come in handy. Here." He pointed at the shelf he'd been working at. "Those two and this one, please."

"Of course not," Cosette agreed as she took the indicated books off the shelves, taking care to handle them gently. "I thought it might be useful if one's in a hurry, but now that I think about it -- is it? Or is it slower? And how do you tell one page from another if you can't turn them?"

"Very carefully, and very slowly." Bob sighed. "It takes a bit of effort to narrow my focus to one page, but once I do that, the page itself comes fairly quickly. Probably only a bit slower than actual reading."

He led the way back over to a table. "But if they're still on the shelf, I have to stand in the middle of all the other books and try ignoring them while I'm doing it. This is much easier; thank you."

"It's hard enough for me to pick one book and read it, knowing how many more are right there," Cosette said with a laugh. "I wouldn't be able to concentrate on doing that at all. Has anyone found anything of use yet, do you know?"
nuclear_snide: (uh-huh if you say so)

"We're working on it," Bob said, giving her a smile for the bookishness. "Kenzi gave us a bit of a lead earlier - it seems to be tied to the new shop in town. Now we just need to figure out how and what to do about it."

He was possibly being purposely vague. Cosette didn't exactly strike him as the type to have magical defences up her sleeve; it was probably best she didn't decide to run off and help.

"Needful Things?" Cosette's expression shifted into a frown. "I thought it was a little bit funny how busy it always seemed to be. I never did get a chance to go look, but I'm glad, now. You don't think it will come down to fighting again, do you? I'm no use there, nor if magic's called for."

She sounded a bit put out by that, but at least you could take that as reassurance that she wasn't going to do anything too rash?

He was taking it as precisely that, yes. It was good to know your limits!

"Neither am I without a body, if it's any consolation," Bob told her. "I don't know if it'll come to fighting, honestly. I guess we'll have to wait and see. And research! That we can do."

"I've been trying for a week or two now to see if I can find out anything about what was wrong with the deer, to no avail." Cosette sighed. "Though likely it's because I wasn't looking in the right place, was I? Father says that there are things -- mold and fungus, I think he said -- that sometimes grow on grains and make the animals who eat them sick, and I thought it might be something like that. I didn't think it might have anything to do with that shop."

She paused. "But who would have? That's what's so clever about it."

"We're still not sure how it's affecting the island or why he'd want to, either," Bob said. "Unless it's simply a side-effect of him feeding on its magic."
